Chapter 5 - Theory of Chivalry
"What is a hero? Why is a hero? Why is a hero? Why is a hero? Although the behavior of a hero does not conform to the formal laws and regulations, what they say will be fulfilled and they will do things very decisively. They have promised others, so they will do it sincerely. They will spare their lives to save others' dangers. Once they save others from the brink of danger and death, they will never be proud of their own abilities, and at the same time are ashamed to boast about their own character." Mo Zi was in front of the stage, behind his hands and talking freely.
"In life, we must not avoid peace or danger. The Grand Historian said: 'In the past, Yu Shun was embarrassed by the Jingli, Yi Yin was carried on the tripod, Fu Shuo hid in Fu's danger, Lu Shang was trapped in Jijin, Yi Wu was shackled, and a hundred miles of rice oxen, Zhong Ni was afraid of Kuang, and the food was Chen, and Cai. These are all the so-called benevolent people of the scholars, but they still suffered this disaster, let alone the end of the troubled times with their talents? How can they be better at the death of the murders!"
"So sir." A student stood up and bowed to Mozi. "What is the criterion for judging benevolence?"
Mozi glanced at him, stroked his beard, and nodded to signal him to sit down.
"Different people judge that a word of benevolence has different definitions. People who are despised often say: 'Discribing benevolence and righteousness means giving me goodness as the standard, and those who treat me well are virtuous people.' So Boyi was ashamed of the Emperor Zhou and starved to death in Shouyang Mountain, while King Wen and King Wu did not derogate the king's title because of this. However, Zhi and the cruel and violent, their admirers kept praising their benevolence and righteousness. From this point of view, 'Those who steal the hook were punished, and those who steal the country were princes.'"
"So sir, Fei Ziyan said: 'Confucianism uses literature to disrupt the law, and heroes use martial arts to violate the ban.' So is a hero a benevolent or righteous or abstaining from the king's law?" A student raised his own question.
"Of course, there are some stubborn scholars who are stubbornly entrusted with short-simple morality and are isolated from the world for a long time. How can they compare with those vagabonds who have low opinions, common knowledge and pursue fame and fortune with the flow? Once these vagabonds from ordinary people make promises, they will act for justice thousands of miles, and go to death for others without regard for secular discussions. They also have strengths, and they are not able to do it casually. Therefore, people in danger can trust their lives to the vagabonds. Isn't this a wise and hero? If the knights in the countryside alleys compare with Ji Ci and Yuan Xian, the contributions they made to the society at that time cannot be compared. But from the perspective of the remarkable efficacy and the credit of words, how can the righteous behavior of the knights be underestimated?"
"Students are taught." The student thought about Mozi's remarks for a while and suddenly realized.
"How can the knight compare with Confucian scholars such as Mengchangjun, Chunshenjun, Pingyuanjun? They all recruit talents and are famous for their benevolence, righteousness and morality." Before the previous student could sit down, another student stood up and asked.
"In ancient times, the basis for the people's chivalrous people was no longer verified. But compared with the modern Yanling Jizi, Mengchangjun, Chunshenjun, Pingyuanjun, and Xinlingjun who rely on the relatives of the king. With the wealth of fiefs and ministers, they have attracted the wise and capable of the world, so that their reputation will be spread throughout the world, the knights will do more glorious and majestic. This cannot be said that Yanling Jizi, Mengchangjun, Chunshenjun, Pingyuanjun, and Xinlingjun are not considered virtuous. But this is like shouting with the wind, not because the sound is faster, but because the wind is just aroused. On the contrary, the chivalrous people of the folk cultivate their words and deeds, hone their own character, and make their reputation spread throughout the world, and make everyone in the world praise their wise and capable. This is precious!" Mo Zi smiled and answered the student who asked the question.
"From the past of our dynasty, the deeds of the knights were buried and could not be seen. I regret it. As far as I know, since the rise of our dynasty, there were Zhu family, Tian Zhong, Wang Gong, Ju Meng, and Guo Jie. Although they often violated the law, their personal virtues and honest and humble style have made people praise them. Their reputation was not established out of thin air, and people did not submit to them out of thin air. As for the like, they formed gangs, currying together with powerful people, colluding with money, bullying the poor, and using barbaric violence to indulge in the weak, in order to indulge in greed and seeking their own happiness, the knights also hated these ugly behaviors. I sighed that the world did not understand the intentions of the knights, and rashly regarded the Zhu family, Guo Jie and others as similar types and laughed at them!" Mo Zi said to himself.
"Guo Jie is short, smart and powerful. He was cruel and vicious when he was young, and when he was indignant, he killed people like a numb. He sacrificed his life to avenge his friends. He not only protected the outlaws to commit crimes and rob, but also minted coins and stole the graves. He did not know what he had done. But he could get away at a dangerous moment every time.
When Guo Jie got older, he began to reflect on his behavior and began to use kindness to resolve the people who resented him. He often gave charity to others without asking for rewards from others. He saved other people's lives and did not boast about his contributions at all, hiding his merits and fame. Over time, his benevolence and righteousness spread, and more and more people depended on him and gradually became their own power.
Guo Jie's nephew relied on Guo Jie's power to drink with others and let them drink. Until the man could no longer drink, he would force the wine and humiliate his family. The man got angry and pulled his sword to kill Guo Jie's nephew, and ran away.
Guo Jie sent someone to find out where the murderer was. The murderer was frightened and came back to tell Guo Jie the truth. Unexpectedly, Guo Jie said, "It is your duty to kill him, it is my nephew who was unreasonable first." So he ordered people to let the murderer go and attribute the blame to his nephew. When the world heard this news, they praised Guo Jie's moral behavior and admired him even more. His sister said to others angrily: "Guo Jie is really righteous. He killed his nephew, but let the murderer go." So she threw her son's body on the road and did not bury it, hoping to humiliate Guo Jie with this.
Once when Guo Jie returned from out, people respectfully made way for him, but a man sat proudly blocking his way. Guo Jie sent someone to ask him for his name. The man did not speak or move, and continued to block Guo Jie's way. Some of the guests thought that the man insulted Guo Jie and wanted to kill that person. Guo Jie stopped him and said, "I am in the village and cannot get respect from others. This is because I have not had enough moral cultivation. What are the sins of him?" The guests stopped.
Guo Jie later learned that his family had a widowed mother who needed care, and secretly asked Wei Shi for this, "I care about this person very much. Please be exempted when it is his turn to serve." From then on, the county officials never asked this person who was impolite to Guo Jie to serve again. He was surprised by this person and went to the official office to ask the reason. He learned that it was Guo Jie who had waived his servants. He was very moved and blamed himself for his arrogant behavior towards Guo Jie. In order to repay his kindness, he apologized to Guo Jie. When the people heard this news, they admired Guo Jie's behavior more and more.
One day, someone in Luoyang made a fight, and dozens of wise men and heroes in the city mediated, but both sides never listened to the advice. The heroes went to Haojing to ask Guo Jie to explain the situation. Guo Jie went to meet the two who made enemies. Out of respect for Guo Jie, they obeyed the advice and prepared to make peace. Guo Jie stopped him and said, "The Lords of Luoyang mediated for you before, but you refused to accept it. Now I am lucky that you can listen to my advice, but I, Guo Jie, cannot take the face of all the wise men and heroes in Luoyang." Therefore, Guo Jie left that night and left a message to the two: "When I leave, remember to let Luoyang heroes mediate again."
