Chapter 5 The Brayevsky Artillery Position

Chu Sinan's car continued to speed on the bumpy path for about half an hour. The shadow of a city appeared far away on the horizon in the east. Chu Sinan learned from Lukoonki that this city next to the Svery River was their destination - Blaevsky. The main position of artillery in episode 13 is located in the southwest of the city.

"Comrade Chu Sinan, should we go directly to the artillery garrison or to the command center first?" the driver in front asked with his head slightly.

Chu Sinan took out the pocket watch that Gilnilova gave him from his military uniform, looked at it and said, "There is not much time left. Let's go directly to the artillery station. I think Comrade Meletskov and others should be there too."

"Then, what should Comrade Ulanova do? Will you let her go with you?" Lukoonki turned around and asked after hesitating.

"Oh, this..." Chu Sinan turned his head and looked at Ulanova sitting beside him. This quiet and shy woman had never said a word since she got in the car. She was sitting alone by the car door on the right, and didn't know what she was thinking.

Logically speaking, Ulanova, as a non-military person, or a military literary and artistic personnel, has no right to know the combat plan formulated by the top military leaders. However, Chu Sinan considered that the shelling plan this time would be implemented soon, so it was no secret to the outside world, and there was no need to hide it from anyone. Therefore, after a brief consideration, he nodded and said, "Let's go together."

After hearing what Chu Sinan said, Lukoongi said nothing anymore and turned his head silently.

The car turned a corner at an intersection and headed southwest. The road was obviously much more vigilant. There were four roadblocks along the way, and almost every roadblock was guarded by a large number of Soviet soldiers. However, these were not a problem for Chu Sinan. He not only had the pass issued by the Northern Front Army Command, but also his own special certificate. These things were easier to use than anything else.

After about ten minutes, the car turned around at an intercepting door made of barbed wire mesh and drove into a huge cannonyard, which was the main position of artillery for episode 13.

Chu Sinan could see from the car window that in the open space at the end of the cannon array, a group of people gathered there. The most prominent one was a short and fat man in a dark military coat. Chu Sinan knew that that person was Meretskov.

"Are we going to attack the north bank of the river?" At this moment, Ulanova, who had been silent, suddenly spoke.

"Oh?" Chu Sinan retracted his gaze from outside the window, looked at her, and replied without hesitation, "Yes, the attack will be..."

He looked at his pocket watch again and replied: "The attack will begin in eighteen minutes, it is a shelling. Our artillery will use the artillery they control to destroy the frontier positions and bunkers of the enemy on the other side first."

"Oh?" Ulanova's eyes flashed with excitement. After thinking about it, she said, "So, Comrade Chu Sinan, don't you know if I can be lucky enough to witness this magnificent scene with my own eyes?"

"This..." Chu Sinan was a little surprised. The person around him didn't look like the kind of woman who likes the smoke of war.

"I have been thinking about creating a new work," Ulanova himself explained. "The theme is to reflect a sharp and contradictory atmosphere that can only be reflected in war. On the one hand, it is a joy to win hopes for victory, and on the other hand, it is a painful struggle to gain a glimmer of chance of survival. But I have never had the opportunity to witness or experience it personally, so I can never start this creation. I think today may be an opportunity for me, so I am sure you can give me such a chance."

After Ulanova finished speaking, she looked at Chu Sinan with a gaze. Obviously, she wanted to get a positive answer from the major general who had first met and had a bad reputation.

"Okay, Comrade Ulanova," Chu Sinan thought for a while, and said when the car was about to stop, "I personally agree with your request, but if it can be passed, I must obey Comrade Meletskov's opinion. I will ask him for advice for you later."

"Thank you." Ulanova said sincerely. At this moment, she felt that the military commissioner in front of her who made the lower-level officers in the Northern Front Army extremely concerned was not so difficult to get along with.

"Ah, Comrade Chu Sinan, I finally waited for you," Meletskov stepped down from the car and quickly met Chu Sinan with his strong steps. While shook hands with him, he smiled, "I have already received a notice from Comrade Cui Kev. He told me that you will come to inspect our offensive operations in person..."

Meletskov said this and suddenly stopped. He widened his eyes and looked at Ulanova who had emerged from the other car door in astonishment. After a while, he said, "Comrade Ulanova, you..."

"Oh, that's it," Chu Sinan hurriedly inserted, interrupted Meletskov, and then briefly said what happened on the road. At the same time, he also mentioned the request Ulanova had just made to Meletskov.

To be honest, as the recognized ballet queen of the Soviet Union, Ulanova has a great reputation in the Soviet Union. After all, in the Soviet Union, ballet is as popular as vodka. What's more, Ulanova is also the winner of the Lenin Medal and Stalin Prize, so Meletskov must have known her.

Meletskov obviously had no objection to Ulanova's request. He almost didn't think about it and immediately agreed.

"Comrade Meretskov," Chu Sinan asked after Meretskov exchanged a few greetings with Ulanova, "How are your battlefield arrangements done? I hope I can understand the situation first."

"It's such a Comrade Chu Sinan," said Meletskov, "For this offensive plan, I used all my artillery forces on the line of Blaevsky, with a total of 420 artillery pieces. In addition, three mortar battalions were arranged along the Sveri River. The artillery mainly attacked enemy fortresses and offensives on the other side of the river, and the combat mission of the mortar battalion was to destroy the enemy's frontier positions to the greatest extent before the crossing forces launched an attack."

"What is the arrangement of the offensive troops?" Chu Sinan nodded. He was obviously satisfied with Meletskov's artillery strike tactics. "Are you sure to take the landing field on the other side of the river within four hours after the attack is launched?"

"No problem," said Meletskov, confidently, "I decided to use the 27th Infantry Division. In terms of force, we have already gained a great advantage."

"But..." After Meletskov finished speaking, hesitantly asked, "We need to..."

Chu Sinan waved his hand, interrupted Meletskov, and said, "Now for us, everything is necessary. Comrade Cuikov and I have the same opinion. Your troops must take the landing ground on the other side of the river in the early morning of tomorrow, destroy the Finnish garrison's riverside combat command on the other side, and prepare for large-scale crossing of the river."
