The Giant Magellan Telescope (giant  magellan Telescope, abbreviated as gmt), also known as the giant Magellan Telescope, is an extremely huge ground-based telescope planned to be put into use in 2022. It will be built at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.

GMT was built in cooperation with the Australian National University of 8 units including the Carnegie Institute in Washington, USA. If this plan is successful, not only the observation and imaging clarity, but only the lens manufacturing technology will be completely upgraded to a completely new level.

Of course, there is another point: because it is difficult to process and manufacture, the cost of each mirror may exceed 20 million US dollars.

If the raw materials for making the mirror and the nine-month process of processing the lenses are removed, the remaining polishing and polishing costs may be half less.

The remaining half is about 10 million US dollars, which is distributed within three or four years of manufacturing. The annual cost is only 2 or 3 million US dollars, which is 4 million US dollars to death.
