Chapter 20 Accidents
It was afternoon now, and Halandil thought the sewer would be more depressed, but who thought it would be more lively than at night. Many humans and half-elves were passing through, and many elves even appeared.
People of all kinds gather here like cockroaches set out for food - old elders, prodigal sons holding two female companions, and fat women. They go in and out of restaurants and grocery stores, but rarely buy things, or walk into a corner, and have changed into completely different dresses when they come out.
Halandil casually bought some food and listened carefully to their secret whispers. The conversations of these people were composed of words, but they were firmly surrounded by some key messages like vortexes:
"The Church...Amplification...Stone Carvings"
"Salvation...conditions..."
“Communication ceremony…”
These people whispered, and whenever they found information of concern, their dull eyes would suddenly brighten like torches in the wind, and then immediately restrained.
An elf commander died inexplicably, and a lady with a low status was in danger. Behind it is a mysterious group of half-elves and humans, the search work of the official war is impossible to keep it confidential. The curfews and large-scale searches that will be carried out soon will trigger associations...
The martial law order has not been officially issued, but the visitors who are present here have already obtained information from various channels. When major events cause fluctuations, materials that cannot be used for the table are the most prosperous.
Halandil suppressed his curiosity. He was half an official in the whole incident, and a series of encounters were like messy threads that were hard to figure out. If someone could analyze it for him, he would be happy to listen, but Pilottis asked him to go home, it would be better to go home.
At this moment, a man came to Halandil and looked at a small stone sculpture from his collar with his eyes intertwined. This stone sculpture was ugly and twisted, with octopus-like tentacles and curled human figures, but it was more quaint and vicissitudes than the one that Corporal Piloro carried, with a faint heavy and fearful atmosphere.
Halandil immediately glanced at the man with caution and found that he was a human, with an ordinary appearance and inconspicuous in the crowd.
The man put away the stone sculpture and whispered in the half-elf's ear: "I am Jung, and I come to find you according to the will of the mentor. Mr. Halandil, you are in the whirlpool of danger, we can help you. Come to a secluded place with me."
This sounds suspicious and makes people feel uneasy. But Harandil remembered the small note he received when Miss Rose was killed - a human child stuffed the note into his hand with the words "Run".
Maybe they knew something, and ask a little while paying attention to safety... Halandir secretly mobilized his plague power. As long as there was any abnormality, he would take action. Then, he asked softly:
"What's the matter?"
The man whispered calmly:
“We bought some information from Miss Rose.
"Miss Rose secretly took away some mysterious items from the residence of the executive officer of Antiha. We condemn this theft, but the discovery in it made us shudder. And all of this is related to you."
After saying that, Jung winked and took Halandil to a tavern next to the sewer, and sat down in a secluded private room. Then he said:
“We are the Ourobosnake, the destroyer of the world, and the creator of the future.
"Our comrades are committed to liberating the oppressed Canaanite half-elves and humans, and have been active here for many years."
"One of our comrades once sent you a message, but the conditions are limited and cannot be accurately conveyed to you."
Jung said, taking out a copper plate the size of a coin, which was carved with a snake that was devouring its own tail. In the concept of the mysterious world, the Ourobosnake is an existence that can proliferate itself and an immortal cycle.
Then, the strange man talked:
"We got an ancient statue from Miss Rose, the one you see. According to her, her master had a habit of collecting horror objects, all of which came from half-elves who died in battle.
"Most members of the Half-Elf Force have been strengthened by extraordinary traits. Canaan officials have enhanced your strength and agility through potions so that they can be competent for combat. However, such improvements are ultimately limiting. Half-Elf soldiers are often troubled by madness. Officials and private often do some research about them, and related materials and knowledge can be sold at a good price.
"Miss Rose said that among these objects, some small statues are particularly valued by her owner, and must be very valuable.
"Please see, it's this. Its outline is vaguely human, but it has an octopus-like head, with a large number of tentacles stretched out from its face, a gel-shaped torso covered with scales, a pair of giant claws on the front and back feet, and a pair of narrow and long wings behind it. This is a monster. It vents its intimidating and ferocious malice, and its body is slightly bloated. It squats on a rectangular stone platform or base in an evil posture, covered with unrecognizable characters. The monster's hind legs are curved in a squat position, with long claws like bows, clamping the front edge of the stone platform, and the part of the claw tip extending downward is as long as a quarter of the height of the stone platform. The head tilts forward, so the tip of the tentacles on the face can reach the back of the claws of the giant front claws, and the heart of the claws is downward, pressing on the knees ready to go. The statue exudes a pathological vitality as a whole, and the mysterious origin makes the fear deeper into the bone marrow."
Jung described the statue of the cult that Halandier had seen many times. Halandier recalled the scene when he investigated Antiha's residence. There were many carvings of stones and bones, but there were no monster statues with the same strange appearance, otherwise he would have noticed it as soon as possible.
Halandil fell into deep thought. He realized that even though Rose stole some from it, most of it must have been left behind. In other words, someone took these things from Antiha's residence and found nothing during investigation.
Jung did not care much about Halandir's contemplation, but continued:
"My mentor is searching for any clues and knowledge about the origin of the stone sculpture. The known clues make us know that this is a totem of a church group isolated from the world and is separated from the long river of history, and its belief itself is also a mystery.
"In the world where we live, we have never seen such an image, among the revered righteous gods of prophecy and destiny, the god of contract and order, the queen of silver moon and starlight, the god of storm and thunder, the goddess of night and shadow, the god of flame and forging, the seven majesties of the Holy Light and the Lord who are subordinate to them, without a trace of this, as if the existence it implies has nothing to do with the world; as if it comes from some ancient and unclean civilization, which is terrifying and out of our world's cognition."
Harandilmo listened silently. This small stone statue crossed a different world like him, and he had to worry about it.
"During the investigation, we also obtained a list from Miss Rose. It is said that Antiha carefully kept the list in his notebook, with strange symbols drawn behind each name," Jung continued. "We checked the information and found that there were thirteen half-elf warriors on the list, twelve of them had died in battle. With the cooperation of official insiders, we noticed that nearly half of the dead on the list were killed or had contact with an enemy called 'White Death'."
“…”
This sudden message made Halandil feel terrified. He had guessed Jung's next sentence:
"And the thirteenth warrior, the only survivor, is you."
This made Halandil feel like he was struck by lightning. He had already realized that he had a vague connection with the murder of Antiha, but he was still an unconceivable direction to become the target. After all, before Loan occupied Halandil's body, the poor ranger was just a consumable on the battlefield, a poor worm who didn't even have free sleep.
He took a few breaths and tried to calm his mind.
After a brief panic, Halandil even had an idea - this guy named Jung might have deceived me with some conspiracy.
Just as he was about to ask a few questions, the outside of the tavern suddenly became noisy. The dense sewer was like a rat running through the tide, making panic-like sounds.
Amid this chaotic sound, several firm footsteps rushed straight towards the tavern. Before the guests in the store got up and left, a small team of military policemen in black uniform broke into the door. They were fully armed and shouted fiercely to the people in the store:
"Gendarmerie, Chadizine!"
