499 Warsaw (middle)
The closer the war is to the end, the busier people like Learvin will be. In the post-war distribution of interests, conspirators like her must run around, whether they are planning a conspiracy or breaking the situation set by their opponents, they need her.
Anyway, since June 1944, Li Erwin has been very busy and has become a veritable airborne. He was in China, in the Middle East, in France, and in the United States.
However, today Lilwin was in London, and she had a secret meeting with Vowardslaw Lachkievich. Everyone may not be familiar with Vowardslaw Lachkievich, and in fact, they don’t need to be particularly familiar with it, because this guy is not an important person, and in history he is a little stronger than a little unknown person. As long as you know that he is the president of the Polish government in exile.
Although Poland was cheated badly by Britain and France during World War II, at a critical moment, these bigwigs of foot cloth still ran to Britain to hug their legs and established an exiled government. In history, with the Soviet Red Army liberating Poland and establishing the People's Republic, it seemed that there was no such exiled government. But in fact, it was not. The Polish exiled government was operating until 1990, when the Soviet Union could no longer control Eastern Europe. In a sense, the Polish government in later generations was actually a direct descendant of the exiled government.
As the boss behind the Polish government in exile, the British naturally wanted to support this government and seek future interests in Poland. It would be even better if Poland could be controlled through this government in exile. Of course, it would be quite difficult to do this, because first of all, we have to ask whether the Soviet Union agreed. If the Soviet Union did not agree, could the British fight directly to Poland?
The British had the same idea at that time. It was unrealistic to try to seize Poland with a strong tiger's mouth. Churchill believed that he could only make a deal with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union recognized the legitimacy of the exiled government, while Britain recognized that the Soviet Union enjoyed the same status as Britain in Poland. In short, Britain and the Soviet Union shared Polish interests.
The British felt that their proposal was already very considerate of the Soviets. If the polar bear knew each other, they should have welcomed them happily. However, in history, comrades in steel did not eat this at all, and directly swallowed Poland with all their bones and skins. As for the legitimacy of the exiled government, I'm sorry that the Soviet Union did not recognize it. You can continue to play houses in London!
It can be imagined that if it weren't for the collapse of the Soviet Union later, this Polish government in exile would have really no meaning, at least for the 45 years from 1945 to 1990.
Today, Lierwen held talks with Vowadslaw Lachkievich, and naturally he still wanted to make an old idea, use the exile government to gain Polish interests and curb the Soviet Union's expansion in Eastern Europe.
In fact, this is not their first secret meeting. During the three months from May to August, Learvin and MI6 regularly contacted Vowadslaw Lachkievich, and the main matter discussed was the Warsaw Uprising or the Polish Uprising.
Yes, in the initial plan, Learwin's idea was to incite a large-scale uprising throughout Poland and overturn Germany's rule in Poland in one fell swoop. The German rule was over, so naturally the Polish government in exile could go home. At that time, there was no matter what the Soviet Red Army had done.
But this is really wishful thinking. After MI6 contacted the exile government in Poland's interior, it was found that Poland's resistance was not really strong. Especially after the failure of the Jewish uprising in April 1943, the Soviet Union and East Prussia stopped supporting Poland's underground resistance organizations, believing that they were feeding dogs with real money and silver. Close to the limited support from Britain and the United States, the Polish resistance organizations were naturally not strong. Compared with the behemoth of the German army, it was as ridiculous as an ant.
According to the MI6 estimate, if an uprising is incited across the country, it may cause some trouble for the Germans, but millions of heavy casualties will be paid. If the Germans forcefully suppress it, bloody purge of Poland would be like playing. At that time, not only could the German invaders not be able to drive away the German invaders, but the exiled government's power in Poland was severely damaged. How can we deal with the Soviet Red Army that was forcing upwards?
So after repeated research, MI6 and the Polish government in exile reached an agreement to not engage in an uprising that bloomed everywhere, but instead chose to make a key breakthrough, and simply launched a large-scale uprising in Warsaw. First of all, Warsaw is the heart of Poland. Launching an uprising here has great political significance and can show the world the presence of the Polish government in exile. Once it succeeds, even the Soviet Union dares not pretend not to see it, right? Secondly, the Soviet Red Army is close to Warsaw. When the uprising broke out, they can watch it without caring about it. As long as the Soviet Union takes control, they will be fooled, which is equivalent to a disguised recognition of the legitimacy of the Polish government in exile!
I have to say that Li Erwen's abacus was a slap in a crack and was preparing to slap the Soviet Union. However, the script was out of Li Erwen's control at the beginning. On the day of the Warsaw uprising, Zhukov's vanguard troops evacuated the suburbs of Warsaw. Later, Rokosovsky's mechanized army ignored Warsaw and began to advance towards Poznan. The meaning was too obvious. Polish foot cloths, you can just play Warsaw, don't play with it!
So would the Poles get rid of it? I'm afraid that's inevitable. According to Hitler's idea, he was planning to turn Warsaw into a giant fortress and let the oncoming Red Army run into a bloody head. So since June, Hitler began to desperately strengthen Warsaw's city defense and defenders. As of August 10, 1944, in this city, the German army had invested a total of two armies, totaling seven infantry divisions, plus the poker of the Polish puppet army, with a total of about 150,000 troops.
Don’t underestimate these 150,000 people, because this is just the force of the inner defense circle of Warsaw, which means that there are so many troops within about 10 kilometers around Warsaw. The outer German army has as many as three armies, and a total of ten divisions. If we include the second-line troops, we will have to add three to four divisions. The cumulative force of the entire Warsaw defense circle is about 500,000.
Moreover, after several months of construction, the Warsaw area was full of barricades and reinforced concrete fortifications emerged one after another, and it turned into a stinky and hard fire hedgehog.
Let me put it this way, according to the estimates of the Red Army Military Commission, if you really want to attack this city, you may have to invest in the first, second and first Ukrainian front army, the three front army, a total of 1.4 million troops. That's it, the Military Commission felt a little nervous and believed that the central front army, which was the chief reserve, must be added to be more confident.
This is also the final reason why the Military Commission gave up attacking Warsaw, because it requires too much force to consume. It is really unprofitable to stop all the main attack clusters of the Red Army in order to attack a Warsaw.
So the final decision of the Military Commission was the Third Front Army of Belarus, and the Central Front Army was responsible for besieging Warsaw. These two front troops had nearly 800,000 troops, and it was competent to trap the German army in the encirclement. The First, Second Front Army of Belarus and the First, Second Front Army of Ukraine continued to attack Poland in depth, striving to attack Germany as soon as possible.
So on the day when the Warsaw Uprising broke out, the Third Front Army of Belarus and the Central Front began to build positions on the periphery of Warsaw, cutting off Warsaw's ties with the outside world and isolating it.
So when the Polish government in exile suddenly told the Soviet Union that it was about to launch a large uprising and requested the Red Army to support it as soon as possible, the Soviet government's official reply was: "The Red Army has no plans to capture Warsaw in the near future, and the supplies are seriously insufficient and the troops are quite tired. The Red Army will rest and make full preparations before starting the Warsaw battle. So we recommend that the Polish people maintain restraint..."
At the beginning, the Polish government in exile and Learvin were quite happy to receive this reply. They wanted the Russians to stop. In this way, once the Warsaw uprising is successful, the political benefits will be extremely huge.
However, Learvin and the Polish government in exile were not happy for more than three days, because the uprising had just broken out and was frantically suppressed by the German army. On the first day of the uprising, more than 20,000 Polish uprising members were killed and injured, and the casualties on the second day were as high as 30,000. On the seventh day, the number of casualties rose sharply like taking an elevator, and more than 50,000 Poles were killed and injured on that day.
Just one week after the uprising began, the Poles in Warsaw paid a price of 100,000 people, which was heavy, but the effect was quite unsatisfactory. They did not control any important department in Warsaw. On the contrary, the insurrectionists were divided and surrounded by the German army, like rats locked in cages.
At this time, the Polish government in exile became anxious and began to strongly ask Britain to help. The British had no good way except for airdropping some weapons and ammunition. They could only kick the ball to the Soviet Union: they asked the Red Army to immediately reinforce the Warsaw Uprising military and civilians.
But the Soviet Union did not take the ball at all, and kicked him back: "The Soviet government has long stated that the Red Army has not yet been able to liberate Warsaw. It has clearly told the Polish government in exile not to act rashly, otherwise all consequences will be held responsible. Obviously, these exiles did not hear the Soviet warnings in their hearts and took risks without being fully prepared. This is not taking the lives of the Polish people seriously. The Soviet government strongly condemned this speculative behavior!"
Anyway, the Soviet Union said nothing except strong condemnation, and did not mention anything to support the Warsaw uprisings. This shocked the British. Churchill immediately wrote a letter to the Soviet People's Committee, strongly demanding that the Soviet government assume relevant responsibilities and not be able to watch the residents of Warsaw bleeding.
In response to this, the Soviet Union's statement was that of course I would not watch the residents of Warsaw bleeding. I had to move a small stool and sit there to see if it wasn't. Anyway, the one who died was not the Soviet Union's, and the British slap would be dead.
Churchill saw that writing letters to the Soviet Union was not effective, so he could only write another letter to Roosevelt, hoping that the US government would give help and put pressure on the Soviet Union. On the issue of Western Europe, the interests of the United States and Britain are relatively consistent, but the Americans are not as urgent as those of the British. They will not risk offending the Soviet Union until they get tangible benefits.
So Roosevelt just sent a telegram to Trotsky of help, hoping that the Soviet Union would help the Poles in suffering for moral reasons.
So how did Trotsky respond? Lao Tuo was quite thick-skinned, and he immediately reached out to the United States: "It's not that the Soviet Red Army did not want to liberate Warsaw, nor that the Soviet Red Army watched the Warsaw military and civilians bleeding... It was really not enough to have enough energy. The Red Army's supplies were too tight and they could bear the price needed to not liberate Warsaw. If the United States could provide sufficient supplies, the Red Army would be willing to provide assistance to the best of its ability."
Trotsky openly asked for assistance, which means that the Red Army will not move without assistance. When the assistance is received, the Red Army will start to liberate Warsaw. No assistance will be allowed to be negotiated.
It is conceivable that when Roosevelt saw such a telegram, he was probably a little amused and crying. This is simply open blackmail! Why do we Americans do not owe Polish people, so why should we provide assistance?
So Roosevelt's reply to Churchill was just that. Churchill was completely stunned. He really didn't expect the Soviet Union to be so arrogant. He couldn't say that he would become angry and strongly demanded that Britain and the United States stand together and put pressure on the Soviet Union and force the Soviet Union to act according to their command.
Roosevelt naturally refused to do this. He knew that the Soviet Union would definitely not surrender, as this would easily intensify the conflict. The conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union was not so sharp, so it would be impossible to defeat the enemy!
So he "comforts" Churchill: "The Soviet Union has agreed to provide air support and artillery support, not to be desperate!"
Churchill was amused and crying. For the Polish uprisingers who were surrounded by the German army, the Soviet Red Army attacked the Germans on the periphery with the best support. On the contrary, the Red Army's position is thirty kilometers closest to Warsaw. What's the use of artillery? Besides, the Air Force, what's the big city in Warsaw? How are you going to blow up? You're going to take the rebels and the Germans in one fell swoop!
You don’t know what Li Xiaofeng thought, and carried out a devastating bombing on Warsaw, killing a little more, and the burden after the war will be much less. Of course, Li Xiaofeng would not answer this way on the surface, but his answer was really like that: "Of course, the Polish uprisingers indicated the targets for the Red Air Force, and the targets of the Red Air Force attack were limited to their requirements."
It seems very reasonable? But in fact it is not reasonable at all, because it was the target of accurate indication in the 1940s and there were no GPS. Back then, it basically relied on smoke bombs, but who can guarantee that Warsaw's foot cloth could accurately throw the smoke bombs on the Germans' heads?
Taking a step back, even if it is accurate to wipe the foot cloth and throw smoke bombs, the accuracy of bomb drops in the bombs of that era is really a slap, and it is famous for calling for everything. Otherwise, why should Britain and the United States play carpet bombing?
Anyway, the so-called air support is simply a joke, and the final result is probably to bomb the German army and the rebels into the sky. Of course, what Li Xiaofeng wants is this result, and this is the best result. He has already left the words, only artillery fire and air support, as long as you want, just let it go.
What else can the British guy and the foot cloth do? I can only pinch my nose and accept it. If I don’t really have any support, there will be no support. For the British, no matter how much it is, I have to let the polar bears bleed!
Li Xiaofeng hoped that they would like to do it so that he could bomb Warsaw openly, which must be very good. At Li Xiaofeng's request, the Red Army immediately transferred nearly one-third of the bombers that carried out strategic bombing on Germany to the bombing of Warsaw. In addition, according to Li Xiaofeng's requirements, if he had to provide air support regardless of day and night, he would have to provide the maximum support to the Warsaw uprisingers.
But what shocked the pilots of the Red Air Force was that the air support bombing in Warsaw was so tactically strange, because according to the requirements of a certain immortal, all bombers flew as high as possible. The only requirement was to throw the bomb into Warsaw City. As for accidentally throwing it out of Warsaw, we could criticize it verbally. In the eyes of the pilots, the superiors were not trying to support Warsaw, but wanted to wipe them out from the ground with Warsaw and the German army.
On the first night, about 300 bombers of various types visited Warsaw and dropped about 650 tons of aviation bombs in one breath. Anyway, from the night sky, the entire Warsaw was shrouded in a flame. The next day, during the day, the Red Army carried out two waves of large-scale bombings of two hundred aircraft groups, and dropped about 800 tons of bombs again. The entire Warsaw was almost covered by gun smoke!
The fierce bombing once made the German army make a wrong judgment, thinking that the Red Army was about to launch a general attack, so they immediately raised their alert level, preparing to let the rushing Red Army suffer a little. But after waiting for a whole day, they did not see a shadow of the Red Army. Instead, they waited for another wave of bombings of 300 aircraft groups at night.
In two days and two nights, the Red Army threw more than 2,000 tons of bombs on top of Warsaw's head in one breath, almost blowing the ancient city upside down. If the bombing of the two days had not exhausted the bomb reserves of the Red Army's long-range aviation force, it would have probably been possible that Li Xiaofeng would have to continue to blow up.
Of course, although the bombing has stopped, the Red Army artillery has started working again. Although the Red Army artillery positions are generally more than 30 kilometers away from Warsaw, a few cannons can use the bottom concave bombs and bottom mount bombs that have just been developed to be equipped with the troops. The maximum range can be close to 40 kilometers. Although this is not enough to bombard the central city of Warsaw, it is also enough to blow the surrounding area of Warsaw upwards... (To be continued.)
