388 Gorshkov's experience (1)

In most people's memories, the first thing that comes to mind when talking about Pearl Harbor is the famous surprise attack in World War II. To this day, people are still happy to explore the inside story behind the "Pearl Harbor incident", but few people know that in the hottest summer of 1943, the Red Navy was also stationed there for a long time.

Gorshkov began with the above words in his memoir about the Pacific War, but he did not immediately tell the story of the bloody battle, but instead wrote about Pearl Harbor with a strong ink.

"The Hawaiian Islands are located in the eastern hinterland of Great Pingyang, about 3,800 kilometers away from the west coast of the United States. They are island groups formed by the eruption of Pacific plate crust movement volcanoes. The archipelago consists of 132 large and small islands, forming an island chain, stretching to 2,450 kilometers. The largest eight islands are concentrated at the southeast end of the island chain. The largest island is Hawaii Island. In order to distinguish it from the entire archipelago, Americans usually call it the Great Island. The extinct volcano on Hawaii Island is 4,200 meters above sea level, and is the highest point of the archipelago and the highest mountain in the ocean."

"However, although Hawaii Island is the largest island, it is not the most populous and most developed island. On the contrary, Oahu, the third largest land area bureau, lives on 90% of Hawaii's population. Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, and the only natural port Pearl Harbor are both located on Oahu."

"When it comes to the Hawaiian Islands, we have to mention the colonial history of imperialism. This pearl of the Pacific did not originally belong to the United States. After the civil war between the natives of the Hawaiian Islands ended in 1795, all tribes surrendered to a chief named Kamekameha, and he also founded the unified Hawaiian Kingdom in 1810, namely Kamekameha I."

"Under the influence of Western missionaries, the Kingdom of Hawaii gradually abolished the barbaric hierarchy and human habits. By the time Kameka Meha III succeeded to the throne, the Kingdom of Hawaii had gradually become modern, and the king himself converted to Christianity. However, in the colonial era, the weak Kingdom of Hawaii was destined to not exist for a long time. As more and more colonists came to Hawaii, they brought advanced civilization and technology. At the same time, they also brought fatal foreign diseases such as smallpox and measles. What's more terrible is that Kameka Meha III had no children when he died in 1872, which triggered a major riot due to the inheritance of the throne. In the end, the Kingdom of Hawaii had to use the British and American troops to calm the situation."

"And this also means that Hawaii lost its sovereignty, and the Western colonists began to influence the fate of the kingdom. They entered the government as ministers, and eroded the Kingdom of Hawaii through so-called democratic means such as constitutionalization and elections. Finally, with the help of the US Navy, the monarchy was overthrown and the Republic of Hawaii was established. What's even more ridiculous is that just five years later, Uncle Sam couldn't help but annexed this country that did not belong to them at all - Hawaii was incorporated into the United States as an overseas territory. After that, the Americans waited for another 61 years. In 1959, it was announced that Hawaii officially became the fiftieth state of the United States, and the former kingdom finally turned into a white star on the star-striped flag!"

"Of course, as a soldier, I know very well why the United States is doing this. The Hawaiian Islands and Pearl Harbor are really important. It is 2,400 nautical miles from San Francisco, 3,840 nautical miles from Tokyo, Japan, 5,300 nautical miles from Manila, and 5,080 nautical miles from Sydney. This is the hub of the Pacific Center. If you control it, the strength of American imperialism will radiate the entire Pacific Ocean!"

"It is precisely because Hawaii is so important. For half a century, Americans have been trying to strengthen the defense of the island. Objectively speaking, Oahu and Pearl Harbor are indeed impregnable, and no one can conquer this fortress from the water. Of course, we all know that with the development of technology, it is not enough to just focus on the enemy on the water. The Japanese used aviation troops to teach the US Navy a lesson. Standing on the bridge of the USS Tallinn heavy cruiser, I could see the scars left by the attack. The USS Arizona was still leaking heavy oil, and the sea was pitch black. This old battleship might be telling its pain in this way. It reminds everyone that they will be in danger if they forget to fight!"

"However, the Americans' engineering efficiency is very high. A considerable number of damaged warships have been repaired, and various military facilities on the island have been renovated, and more anti-aircraft guns and aircraft are deployed here. I believe that if the Japanese were smart enough, they would not want to take another risk!"

"I had a good first impression of Hawaii. Even after the war, it looked very modern and developed, at least much better than the cold Kronstadt. We were arranged separately, and the Americans also strengthened the confidentiality work as much as possible. The docks were filled with sailors wearing khaki uniforms and old-fashioned rifles. Anyone who was close to the coastline and docks of the Red Navy for non-work reasons must be harshly questioned, even if he was an active-duty soldier."

"The military police wearing white m1 helmets with the word mp are constantly patrolling. We think of them as if we were about kgb. The soldiers are more interested in their helmets because the Americans' m1 helmets are so special. This kind of helmet is divided into two layers, the outer helmets are an iron shell, while the inner helmets are varied, with fiber products and waterproof cardboard shells. Of course, the early paper shells are more of them."

"For me, the Americans' idea is too unique. Do steel helmets need to be made into two layers inside and outside? At least for the Soviet Red Army, it is not necessary. However, I later learned that the important reason why Americans used this catamaran helmet was that the lightweight helmet (inner helmet) could replace the standard lollipops in the station or gathering place in daily service. When it was necessary to be put into battle, soldiers could quickly buckle the heavy outer helmet. To be honest, this is really a painful idea. In addition to causing trouble for production, the only use of this design is to let some senior officers wear helmets and pretend to be (in the old historical photos, many senior American officers wearing M1 heroic postures and erect, but they only wear helmets, which is actually pretending)."

"In addition to the m1 helmet, what the Americans can also surprise us is the ugly dog-food basin hat worn by their sailors. To be honest, it is hard for me to imagine why the Americans made their naval demeanor so ugly? Anyway, our young men resisted such ugly hats, and they generally missed our Red Navy military caps."

"Of course, what Uncle Sam left us is not all bad impressions. The young men are extremely satisfied with the luxury life of the US Navy. Of course, I am not going to criticize anything, there is nothing worth criticizing. Any kind of weapon needs to be manipulated, and the quality of people will determine the effectiveness of these weapons. People are very fragile, and the political commissars are not as useful as a bottle of ice beer or a box of ice cream. I sincerely hope that the Red Navy's logistics support level can also be viewed with the American peers. The Americans did a good job in this regard. In order to alleviate the mental and exhaustion caused by the long-term space and the numerous rules of warships, as well as the huge pressure accumulated by the monotonous and irritable navigation and bloody battles, the Americans created a large amount of logistics facilities and invested huge funds."

"In order to ensure that we, the foreign guests, the Americans have devoted their best. To be honest, this work is not easy to do. Because it is necessary to keep confidentiality, we Russians should stay away from the public's sight and even not have too much contact with real American naval officers and soldiers. This was impossible at that time. But in order to keep the secret as much as possible, the Americans solved the problem in a wealthy way."

"Because we were not convenient to go to Pearl Harbor to rest and have fun, they specially opened leisure and entertainment facilities and venues on the nearby islands for Red Navy officers and soldiers. First of all, they completely transformed the deserted island to make it liveable. The weeds and bushes spreading around the island and other unsightly trees were completely cut down and eradicated, and a large amount of herbicides were sprayed. The low-lying wetlands on the island were also filled with coral sand, and insecticides were regularly applied to eliminate the breeding and reproduction of mosquitoes, flies and pests, thereby preventing and controlling the spread of various tropical diseases."

"Secondly, a large number of new leisure and entertainment facilities are built, including a theater with air conditioning and 1,200 seats. The stage is built with prefabricated components of the event, 7.5 meters long and 12 meters wide, and can be performed on stage plays or films. The theater was built in just 10 days. The entertainment area also includes a bar that can accommodate 500 people to drink and chat, and a clean and tidy restaurant to provide various hearty and delicious food to the officers and soldiers."

"The island's barracks are also quite good. Each camp bed is covered with soft bedding. You can also buy a wide range of goods from the United States in nearby stores. You can also read the latest published magazines and books in the library (the Americans actually translated into Russian). The officers and soldiers who like sports also have many choices on the island, including tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts and baseball courts. To be honest, we really can't play baseball, and the understanding Uncle Sam immediately converted it into a football court after hearing the news."

"Of course, if you want to have a thorough rest, it is also a good choice to have a sunbathing. Anyone can take off and swim in the sea and then lie on the white sand to enjoy this rare peace. Anyway, except for the very few medical staff, there are basically no women on the island, and this is the most regrettable thing for the young men."

"It is also worth mentioning that although we Russians join the U.S. Navy as volunteers, the Americans do not regard us as real volunteers. They pay every officer and soldier according to the standards of the U.S. Navy. Please note that it is not rubles, but real dollars. To be honest, even if I am already a major general, I have to admit that the salary of the U.S. Navy is more attractive than the Red Navy."

"But this also caused a small problem, that is, the political commissar who followed us to the United States believed that these military pay should not be paid, and as valuable foreign exchange should be submitted to the country, because the country has paid military pay to every officer and soldier. To be honest, the political commissar's suggestions made all comrades unhappy, and almost caused internal strife. At the critical moment, Comrade Sukhoi asked Comrade Andre Petrovic for instructions, and announced that the country would not confiscate the money.

The salary is worthy of the comrades, and the country has no reason to occupy it. According to Comrade Sukhoi, Comrade Andre’s original words were: ‘Did the Soviet Union lack such a small amount of money? The soldiers fought bloody battles on the front line and it is worth it to get a little bonus!’. To be honest, we generally believe that Comrade Andre is more reasonable and loved by his comrades. We sincerely hope that he will be the core leader of the next term. This allows everyone, including other comrades in China, to live a much better life.”

"Continue to go back to the previous topic. In addition to the colorful entertainment activities on the island, the biggest benefit for us is that it can be distributed to ice beer. Drinking is strictly prohibited on ships, even beer cannot be done. And we Russians cannot lack the holy water of alcohol. Although it is stipulated that each soldier can only get two bottles a day. However, the cool ice beer flows through the throat, and the refreshing feeling is enough to relax the nerves and refresh the spirit."

"In addition to beer, the most popular thing on the island is ice cream. As we all know, Americans love ice cream very much. Generally, warships above cruisers are equipped with ice cream aircraft. In order to take care of sailors serving on destroyers, torpedo boats and submarines, the US Navy even stipulates that ice cream is rewarded as a prize to officers and soldiers serving on small and medium-sized warships. For example, a destroyer rescues pilots who have forced landing or parachuting at sea, then it can ask the pilot's aircraft carrier or wing to obtain ice cream that is equivalent to the pilot's weight as a reward."

"In the hot tropical waters, the cold and sweet ice cream has a clear effect on boosting morale. Just like rewarding us with vodka. If there is no ice cream, then there will be a big problem. It is said that once the ice cream aircraft on a large aircraft carrier all failed, causing an officer of the ship to write in his diary half-seriously and half-jokingly: 'Without ice cream, the crew members will rebel!'. On the island, we can all enjoy ice cream to the fullest, which also led to a serious obesity problem. Comrade Kuznetsov had to order the kitchen to reduce the use of fat and sugar..."

"It is worth mentioning that I later discovered that compared with the superior living conditions of the US military and our opponents, the living conditions of the Japanese on the Pacific islands are simply a nightmare level. The Japanese should not be on the difficult front line. Even at the rear base, its logistics supply is terrible!"

"For example, the Japanese army's most important base in the South Pacific, Rabaul often had patients with nutritional disorders due to insufficient supply. Especially in the later period, when the Allies blocked it, the Japanese army often starved to death. So much so that the Japanese commanders could only order their subordinates to support themselves, plant food, fruits and vegetables, and hunt birds, and eat birds, beasts, fish and shrimps. At one point, the Japanese could only chew dry and odorless raw rice to survive. If these hungry people knew that the Americans were going to rebel because they did not have ice cream, they would not know what it would feel like."

"Of course we did not come to the United States to eat, drink, play and enjoy the corrupt life of capitalism. We came to fight and fought to eliminate the Japanese fascism. It is gratifying that most of our officers and soldiers have not forgotten this fundamental task. After arriving at Pearl Harbor, we immediately began adaptive training."

"To be honest, there are many problems. Most of our ships and aircraft did not consider using them in hot tropical areas at the beginning of their design. For example, the Jacques-3k VK-107 engine has a significant power loss in tropical areas and can basically only exert 80% of the power, which has led to a significant decline in the tactical level of the fighter."

"The only thing that makes us feel grateful is that our opponent is not particularly strong. The Japanese A6m3 is much worse than the Jacques-3k in various technical levels. Even if it is a hovering battle, it will not be much better, which puts the pressure on our pilots much less."

"In addition to the engine problem, another problem that troubles us is that the capacity of the Jacques-3k is too small and the combat radius is limited. It is even shorter than the American f4f. Although the abandonable secondary fuel tank can solve this problem, before going abroad, probably for confidentiality, all the Jacques-3k secondary fuel tanks were confiscated, and we were clearly told that this new equipment is not allowed to be used in front of American allies."

"To be honest, this is really fucking. We all want to greet the female relatives of the Navy Command's head and mind at home. We lost our desperate efforts to fight. Without a sub-fuel tank, our fighter's combat radius will be significantly reduced, which also means that our attack aircraft will not be able to obtain full escort of fighter aircraft when attacking certain long-range targets! It also means that the air defense radius of our fleet has been artificially reduced."

"For this issue, Comrade Kuznetsov and Comrade Sukhoi fought countless verbal battles with the idiots in the Navy Command, but these guys with all their heads did not listen to our calls and stubbornly implemented stereotyped confidentiality strategies. In this regard, I can't help but ask: If new equipment is not taken out and used, it is locked in the warehouse and becomes moldy, what is the significance of improving combat effectiveness? Why should these new equipment be developed?"

"It is said that afterwards, Comrade Sukhoi made a report from relevant naval departments to Comrade Andre. It seems that Comrade Andre has directly intervened in this issue. I hope that Comrade Andre, who has great supernatural powers, will not disappoint us this time, and can send us the precious auxiliary fuel tanks to us as soon as possible, because the battle is getting closer and closer!" (To be continued.)
