326 Battle of Tank Guns (3)

It is no wonder that Tukhachevsky was shocked. The ability to penetrate 140 mm of vertical armor at a distance of one thousand meters is already very awesome... ≦. Even if the diameter is longer, the zis-2 with higher initial velocity and chamber pressure has been used. The br-271n armor-piercing bomb that has not yet been produced in large quantities has been achieved. How can the D-5 tank gun without the br-271n level APR bomb be achieved?

Anyway, Tukhachevsky had the urge to hit the wall, because the result was really abnormal and unscientific. What's worse is that he had no idea how D-5 was done. More importantly, this did not achieve the effect he expected, and it did not slap a certain immortal in the face, but could be slapped in the face. What should I do?

Just as Tukhachevsky was thinking about countermeasures anxiously, Li Xiaofeng asked with a smile: "Do you still have to continue competing?"

Tukhachevsky seemed to have been stepped on his tail and jumped up suddenly, shouting angrily: "Bi! The winner has not been decided yet, why not compare!"

Then let’s compete! But how to compete next is a problem. As mentioned earlier, Tukhachevsky felt that the winner could be decided by 750 meters, so he didn’t prepare a competition method one thousand meters away at all.

After thinking for a while, he suggested: "1200 meters target, the thickness of the target plate is 120 mm..."

However, Li Xiaofeng flatly rejected his suggestion. Tukhachevsky sneered: "Why, I dare not compare?"

Li Xiaofeng shook his head and said, "What does 1200 meters mean? Everyone has precious time. Just go to 1500 meters!"

Tukhachevsky took a deep breath because the distance is really far. Yes. It's not a joke at all. The distance of 1500 meters is a normal combat distance for tanks even in the 21st century. Most tank battles are basically held between 1500 meters and 2000 meters. There are very few battles beyond this distance range.

Why? There are probably many comrades who have given many examples of ultra-long-distance tank wars, but that is really not the norm, and it is greatly affected by the weather and environment. Let's put it this way, during the Cold War, whether it was NATO or Warsaw Pact Group, after testing, it was believed that the most likely anti-tank gun war distance in Central Europe was actually between 1,500 meters and 1,800 meters. Even if the effective range of the artillery exceeded this range, due to the undulation of the terrain, it would be difficult for you to have the opportunity to see a target two thousand meters away (not to mention that there is always fog in Central Europe, which has a great impact on sighting. Later, when Britain, which always emphasized long-distance shooting, promoted its 120mm rifled gun, why did Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark not buy it? The reason is that the firepower advantage of the ultra-long-distance distance of the 120 line cannot be exerted at all)!

In World War II, the sight-seeing and fire control systems were quite primitive, and artillery battles at ultra-long distances were naturally more difficult, so the distance of 1,500 meters was quite challenging for the Red Army armored soldiers.

Tukhachevsky was stunned for a moment. Then he came to his senses and said dissatisfiedly: "1500 meters is 1500 meters. Am I still afraid of you?"

Li Xiaofeng didn't care much, shrugged and said, "That's good." Then he ordered the staff of the shooting range: "Build two 140mm thick target plates 1,500 meters away, prepare..."

Before Li Xiaofeng finished speaking, Tukhachevsky interrupted him, and the latter asked in a dog-like expression: "How thick are the target boards do you think?"

Li Xiaofeng replied lightly: "140mm? If you think it's too thin, then thicken it to..."

At this time, Tukhachevsky was really complaining, why? Because he thought Li Xiaofeng was just yelling and pretending, why did he think so? Because the reason is very simple, 140 mm of vertical armor was penetrated at a distance of 1,500 meters. This armor-piercing ability was temporarily only one type of artillery in the Soviet Union, that is, the D-10 tank gun developed from the b34 naval gun.

d-10s (the su-100 artillery has very little difference from the d-10t installed in tanks, and its ammunition is completely universal). When firing a 15.59 kg rb-412b secondary caliber steel core armor-piercing projectile, the initial velocity is 915m/s, which can penetrate 80mm thick armor plates at a distance of 1500 meters.

A comrade will soon complain, and he will say that the armor-piercing ability is very average! It is far worse than the German 88 and long tube 75, and the US 90 and Niu Niu's 17-pound cannon. Please note that the above data lacks an important condition, that is, the 80mm thickness armor has a 60-degree inclination angle. Just look at the table and know that the OS60 degree is 0.5, and the 80mm divided by 0.5 is 160mm. This is the real armor-piercing ability of the D-10 series at 1500 meters distance.

In fact, this still cannot reflect the true anti-armor capability of the d-10, because we must also pay attention to what ammunition it uses. Again, it is too nonsense to talk about armor-piercing ability without ammunition.

The above mentioned that the D-10 uses the RB-412b secondary caliber steel core armor-piercing bullet. There are two keywords for this kind of ammunition, one is the secondary caliber and the other is the steel core armor-piercing bullet. What is the level of the tank gun with the highest level during the same period?

Take the famous 17-pound gun equipped by Firefly as an example. When using widely used AB bombs, the gun can penetrate 140 mm (30-degree angle) double-hard homogeneous armor at a speed of 884m/s, and 131 mm (30-degree angle) thick double-hard homogeneous armor at a distance of 914m. When using the best sub-caliber tungsten carbide core dehulling armor-piercing bombs in the UK, the initial velocity of the muzzle can reach 1190m/s, and 208 mm (30-degree angle) double-hard homogeneous armor at a distance of 457m, and 192 mm (30-degree angle) double-hard homogeneous armor at a distance of 914m.

There may be comrades who don’t like to calculate and still don’t understand it. So, translate the above data. 140 mm (30-degree angle) is equivalent to 161 mm (ninety degrees or vertical), 131 mm (30-degree angle) is equivalent to 151 mm (vertical), 208 mm (30-degree angle) is equivalent to 240 mm (vertical). 192 mm (30-degree angle) is equivalent to 221 mm (vertical).

It is very likely that another comrade will say that the data of d-10 you gave is 1500 meters. There is no data of penetration of one thousand meters. How can I compare this? Don’t worry, this is there. The armor penetration data of d-10 when using br-412b at a distance of 1000 meters is 185 mm (vertical).

Judging from the data comparison, the armor-piercing ability of the 17-pound gun at a distance of 1,000 meters is indeed much higher than that of the D-10, especially considering that the 17-pound gun has a caliber of 76.2 mm, this gap seems to be getting bigger and bigger.

However, the Soviet artillery designers did not have to be ashamed, because Niu Niu's 17-pound cannon is indeed very awesome. It is almost invincible in the same caliber, and even more cannons with larger caliber than many cannons. For example, the US's m3 90mm tank gun, which was the first in armor-piercing power in World War II and the German KK43 71 caliber 88 cannon, these two are only slightly stronger than the 17-pound cannon.

So why is Johnniu's 76.2mm caliber tank gun so awesome? Not only is this gun the crystallization of Niu Niu's meticulous work, but the more critical reason is the armor-piercing bombs used by Niu Niu. Compared with the AB that was commonly equipped at that time (the hollow cap armor-piercing bombs used by D-10, such as the one used by the D-10, and in fact, this is also the one used by the 17-pound gun most often), Niu Niu creatively invented the APDS bomb, which is a rotationally stable shell-piercing bomb using the core of tungsten carbide, which is one level higher than the AB bombs (the high-speed armor-piercing bombs) later used by the United States and the Soviet Union.

Let me put it this way, after the apds ejected out of the bore, it will take off the support wrapped around the core, and most of the cannon's work is concentrated on the core. Therefore, its initial speed is faster and its armor-piercing ability is stronger. However, the apr bullet is slightly worse. After the bore is out of the bore, the support wrapped around the core will still fly with the core. Its resistance is greater, its speed is lower, and the natural armor-piercing power is worse.

In this way, everyone will know that Niu Niu's 17-pound cannon has such good armor-piercing capabilities, and the armor-piercing bomb is a key reason. Not only does it use a tungsten carbide bullet core, but it is also a shell-piercing armor-piercing bomb. The Soviet Union's br-412b is only an AB (hollow-capped armor-piercing bomb), which is two levels lower than Niu Niu's ABDs in the type of ammunition. Moreover, its core is a steel core bullet with a hardness lower than tungsten carbide. Even if it has a larger caliber, the power of armor-piercing bomb is not as good as (simply put, the development of armor-piercing bombs, the earliest one is an AB, that is, an armor-piercing bomb.

Later, I found that it was easy to jump, so I added a quilt cap to a AP, which is a quilt cap armor-piercing bomb. Later, I found that the quilt cap was very hindered, so I added a streamlined hood to the quilt cap, which is apb. Then I found that in order to improve the energy of the quilt cap, the key is the speed and the hardness of the core, I developed the so-called hvap, which means high-speed armor-piercing bomb, also called apr. Later, in order to further increase the speed, I came up with a shell armor-piercing bomb that got rid of the support structure that was meaningless to armor-piercing. This is Niu Niu's apds).

So things are very simple. When the D-10 is indeed not as good as the Niu Niu's 17-pound cannon when firing APPB bombs, does the D-10 still have the potential to enhance? Obviously, this is true. For example, when the D-10 is launching APPR bombs, the armor-piercing ability of 1,000 meters is about 200 mm, and when the APPDs or more awesome APPDs bombs are launched, its armor-piercing ability can be further improved. This is also the main reason why the Russians used the D-10 to continuously improve the D-10 until the 1970s, because the improvement potential of the D-10 is indeed much stronger than the 17-pound cannon.

Speaking of this, I have to say something off topic. A tank cannon has been used for at least ten or twenty years, and it is normal for more than thirty years or even half a century (such as the UK l7 105), so its improvement potential is very important.

What are the two aspects of this potential? The first is the caliber, and the second is the pharmacy. Generally speaking, those with larger diameters have potential than those with smaller diameters, while those with larger pharmacy have potential than those with smaller pharmacy. From a development perspective, these two large ones are the advantage of those with smaller pharmacy. For example, when Rabbit chose the main gun of the third generation tank, why did Rabbit choose the Su-style 125? It is not because Rabbit only knows how to copy the ready-made products of the Russians, nor is it that Hans' rh120. According to the international environment of the 1980s, Rabbit introduced Hans' 120.

But why did the rabbit choose 125 in the end, not the NATO 120? A very important reason is that the development potential of 125 is indeed greater than that of 120, and 125 in caliber is the dominant one. The pharmacy is also larger than that of 125. The kinetic energy of 125 is stronger than that of 120.

Of course. This does not mean that the Russian 125 is very good and powerful. Objectively speaking, the Russian 125 is indeed a problem. The large medicine room brings a larger initial speed and also deteriorates the lifespan of the body tube. The burning is not ordinary. Moreover, the Russian shells are made of water, which in a sense wastes the power of this cannon.

But it is divided into two ends. If better tube materials and metallurgical technology are used to transform the 125 (the Rabbit had it back then). Then, the shells are comprehensively optimized and the advantages of the Russian 2a46 are fully utilized. Isn’t this better? Since that’s the case, why bother with the 120? Rabbit has developed its own 120 tank gun (and has developed two generations). If this caliber is really suitable for the Rabbit, why start the stove again?

Having said so much nonsense, back to the point, back to the point, in those days, the most powerful tank gun in the Soviet Union was actually the D-10 series (much more powerful than the 122mm-caliber D-25 series). The D-10 can only penetrate 160mm of homogeneous armor at a distance of 1500 meters. Now someone even said that the D-5 can penetrate 140mm or even 150mm of armor at a distance of 1500 meters. What is this bragging?

Anyway, Tukhachevsky is ready to watch someone's jokes. Once someone blows his face, he will immediately rush up and slap him ruthlessly in the face.

A new round of shooting has begun. The target is still a 140mm double-hard target plate. The first one to complete the shooting is still t-34-57. Of course, it is impossible for it to penetrate such a large thickness of target. However, ten shells also achieved an average penetration depth of 120mm. It should be said that it is still very good. At least the marshals and generals present were quite satisfied with this number. This number represents that the zis-2 can handle the Tiger tank at a distance of 1,500 meters when using the br-271n armor-piercing projectile. To be honest, everyone thinks this is a bit overkill.

Anyway, Tukhachevsky was quite proud. He looked at Li Xiaofeng with a provocative look, which meant that he would see how you were embarrassed.

So is Li Xiaofeng embarrassed? Surely not, because when the target board shot by D-5 was placed in front of the marshals and generals, everyone couldn't help but take a breath. Ten shots were still ten breakdowns, and this data was simply dazzling.

Tukhachevsky's face turned red in an instant, and he asked shakingly, "How is this possible?"

Li Xiaofeng smiled and asked back, "Why is it impossible?"

Tukhachevsky shouted: "I know the data of the D-5 launching hollow armor-piercing bombs, that is, the level of 1000 meters and 100 mm. How can it be improved so much now?"

Tukhachevsky asked the voices of everyone present. Everyone is an expert, and the data of D-5 is not a secret, at least it is not a secret for generals at their level. With the level of launching APB bombs by D-5, it is absolutely impossible to obtain such awesome data.

Li Xiaofeng replied indifferently: "Let's change to new ammunition!"

When Tukhachevsky heard this, he was furious: "How can you cheat with such immoral methods?! This result is invalid!"

Li Xiaofeng gave him a blank look and snorted, "Then your zis-2 is not cheating. Don't tell me that the br-271n you use is not a new armor-piercing bomb. Don't tell me that the br-271n can be mass-produced! Even br-271p may not be able to do large-scale production, right? Isn't this cheating?"

Tukhachevsky's face turned redder and he didn't expect that his little cleverness would be seen through by someone. Yes, everyone cheated, so don't laugh at him fifty steps!

However, Tukhachevsky was still stubborn: "Although br-271n and br-271p are not mass-produced for the time being, they can also supply the guards on a small scale."

In fact, this is still a lie, because the one that can supply a small number of guards is still the worse-performance br-271p, rather than the blinding br-271n. Tukhachevsky is changing the concept again.

However, this is still useless, because Li Xiaofeng blocked him back with one sentence. A fairy shrugged and said contemptuously: "The problem is that the new ammunition I provide for the D-5 has been fully mass-produced in the northern industry. From October this year, let alone provide for the guards, it can fully supply all armored soldiers and artillery equipped with the D-5 series artillery!"

Tukhachevsky couldn't speak, because a certain immortal slapped his face so hard that he was completely speechless. However, the slap of a certain immortal had just begun, because he soon added: "And the Northern Industry promised that this new ammunition was much cheaper than the br-271 series armor-piercing ammunition, and we can afford it!"

This sentence only touched the itch of many marshals and generals. Of course, they hoped to obtain more powerful armor-piercing bombs, but based on the scale of the Red Army's armored troops and anti-tank artillery, even if this new armor-piercing bomb is good but not cheap enough, the Red Army cannot afford it. For example, the armor-piercing bomb with a core of tungsten carbide bullets, with the existing tungsten resource reserves of the Soviet Union, it is not only a problem that it cannot be used.

But now, Li Xiaofeng told them that this new ammunition is cheap enough, which is really great news for them. In an instant, almost everyone stood on the side of the D-5. As for the zis-2, let this toothpick cannon that is expensive and time-consuming and labor-intensive.

So what method did a certain immortal win this competition? To be honest, even Tukhachevsky wanted to know.

After selling enough, Li Xiaofeng said with a smile: "It's actually very simple. This new type of ammunition is actually an armor-breaking bullet..."

As soon as this statement was made, many generals were shocked, because, tsk, let's say that, they actually have a bad impression of armor-piercing bombs... (To be continued.)
