196 Behind the Enemy (Part 2)

Beloborodov was so anxious that his forehead was sweating because he could not find a place to be able to defend and block the enemy. Just when he was most anxious, Petrovsky's telegram arrived.∈‍♀

In the telegram, Petrovsky ordered Beloborodov to go north quickly, cross the Bug River as soon as possible and then advance towards the Narev River. As for the work of blocking the enemy, Petrovsky said: "I have made arrangements!"

There was indeed a plan. At the beginning, Petrovsky considered the possibility of Beloborodov being entangled. If he couldn't completely get rid of the enemy, he had to have a powerful blocking force to help Beloborodov escape.

At that time, Petrovsky glanced at the terrain south of the Bug River and east of the Levitz River. He was as cold as Beloborodov, and the landform here was flat and completely without any danger!

But having no danger to guard does not mean that you can't guard it. After some thought, Petrovsky left a battalion of infantry in the small town of Wokhuv and told them: "Repair fortifications as soon as possible, and leave the work of the main palace behind you to you!"

This is a not simple task, but the battalion commander Berkyaev took it without complaint. He assured Petrovsky: "Even if there is only the last person left in my camp, we will definitely not let the enemy go one step beyond Wokov!"

Bergayev said this and did it. After occupying Wokhuv, his battalion began to repair fortifications day and night, almost dug Wokhuv into the sky, and arranged four lines of defense along the small town, especially in the city, where the fortifications were almost covered with spider webs.

When Beloborodov's armored troops arrived at Wokhov, they were all shocked. He could not imagine that such a strict fortification was repaired within one or two days.

"Comrade Belljayev. You did a great job! Can you tell me how did you do it?"

Bergayev smiled and replied: "Of course, more than 500 soldiers in my camp cannot do it. We have fully mobilized the residents of Wokhuv!"

This surprised Beloborodov even more because he had not dealt with the Poles. Generally speaking, the foot cloths were not very cooperative, either directly refused or passively slacked off. In short, it is unlikely that these people would take the initiative to help the Red Army.

"How did you do it?" Beloborodov asked in surprise.

After Bergayev looked around, he did not find the existence of NKVD and the political commissar. He then replied in a low voice: "Battle and machine gun!"

Belloborodov immediately understood. Bellagiev probably used force to coerce the Poles to cooperate, and it is not even ruled out that he had used the means of killing the chicken to scare the monkey. However, Belloborodov did not care about all this, nor was he a pedantic person, and he could not take care of so much at critical moments. As long as the troops can be safely escaped from danger, it is understandable to use some unconventional means when necessary.

Beloborodov patted Bellgayev's shoulder and whispered: "You must pay attention to confidentiality. When the superiors ask you, you will say that the Poles took the initiative to assist us. As for those dead Poles, they will say that they are accomplices and supporters of the Nazis!"

Bellgayev nodded softly, and then asked embarrassedly: "Comrade Belloborodov. My troops lack fire support. Do you have any excess artillery to support us?"

When asked this, Belljayev felt blushing. Who wouldn't know that these troops were all gathered together in the east and west. Most of the heavy weapons of the troops were lost. Every cannon was extremely precious. Where was there any redundant place!

But Beloborodov was really good enough, and immediately said, "Let me do this, I captured some German tanks, and now there are five or six left. If your people can drive, I will give them all to you!"

Bergayev hurriedly replied: "I have tankers here!"

Beloborodov immediately called the staff over and left three No. 3 tanks and two No. 2 tanks to Bellgayev, and then shook hands with Bellgayev and said goodbye. But they didn't know that this was their last meeting. In the subsequent battle, Major Bellgayev, who was a little puzzled, died heroically. Only more than 100 people in his troops successfully entered East Prussia.

The Germans came very quickly. After Beloborodov had just left for an hour and a half, the German pursuers arrived at the periphery of Vokhuv, and the battle began quickly. This time, the Germans were quite anxious and did not let Poland wipe their feet and take the lead as cannon fodder like before, but went on the battle in person from the beginning!

About a platoon of German infantry attacked Bergayev's peripheral positions under the cover of 77mm field artillery. It was obvious that the Germans were very anxious. The shelling was short and could hardly cause any trouble to Bergayev's young man. After the short shelling ended, the German infantry launched an impatience to charge.

Bergayev calmly ordered: "Don't shoot, listen to my orders, and let it go and eat these dogs in one breath!"

The silence of the Red Army made the Germans more and more presumptuous. They probably thought that the Russians in the city were scared out of fear. Maybe they could recover Wokhuf in just one armed parade. But they were wrong. When they entered the Red Army's position within two hundred meters, the light and heavy machine guns opened their disguises and fired violently, and in minutes, they gave this row of bones to eat.

"Transfer the machine gun position and be prepared to welcome the enemy's shelling!"

Bergayev issued an orderly order. Under his command, the soldiers raised their machine guns and feet and began to move in an orderly manner. A few minutes later, when the German mortar shells fell, the original position was already empty.

"Very good, just fight like this!" Beloborodov seemed to be in a good mood and joked with the soldiers: "If you continue to fight at this pace, you will all become a Soviet hero!"

On the contrary, the Germans were a little frowning. During the two days of encirclement and suppression, they were almost led by the nose, and they walked around a big circle like walking their dogs, which made the troops so tired that they couldn't breathe.

After finally finding the real position of the enemy, I was ready to bully the guerrillas with my superior forces and firepower, and settle the score with these moles. Who would have thought that the rats were hiding in the mouse hole, but the poisonous snake. Not only did I not take revenge, I got into another platoon.

"Let the artillery fight hard and kill these bastards!" the German commander cursed fiercely.

The artillery also truthfully implemented his intentions. The field artillery and mortars opened fire together, and a bunch of shells fell on Wokhuf like rain, blowing the entire city up to dust.

Of course, to be honest, this did not cause any casualties to Berkayev. His fortifications were very strong and he was prepared to welcome the shelling in advance. The real unlucky part of the German bombardment was that the Polish people, and most of the shells that fell into the city were consumed by them.

At 9:30 in the morning, the German infantry jumped out of the trenches again and rushed towards the Red Army positions under the cover of vast barrage. With the rolling smoke around the battlefield, the German infantry who launched the second wave of offensive quickly rushed to the Red Army positions. But to their disappointment, after being ravaged by such fierce artillery fire, the Red Army soldiers did not collapse, and could continue to jump out of the trenches and bravely engage in bloody hand-to-hand combat with them.

In other words, as soon as they arrived at the forefront of the Red Army's position, the German army was hit hard by the Red Army, and the battle was very fierce and cruel. After paying the heavy casualties, the German army barely broke through the Red Army's first line of defense.

The second round of attacks of the German army seemed to be thunderous and rainy. Or they underestimated the opponent's strength and combat will, and were still attacking the opponent with the strength of the guerrillas. The seemingly majestic artillery preparation effect was really average. Most of the Red Army fortifications that were "kissed" by German artillery shells could continue to fire a series of deadly bullets. The most failure was the German use of tanks. Because the German infantry leading the way failed to tear a real breakthrough on the Red Army's defense line, in this "one-sided" battle, all the German tanks actually became soy sauce parties on the battlefield.

For a whole morning, the German army advanced only 500 meters forward. Colonel Rudolf, the German Wehrmacht who was responsible for the full command of the pursuit and annihilation battle, wrote in his diary: "The progress is not going smoothly, and the battle here is much more difficult than I expected!!"

Just when Rudolph was frowning about the poor progress, a sudden good news made him feel a little relieved. Given that the enemy guerrillas were more important than imagined, with the approval of Marshal Bok, the garrison troops (a battalion) originally stationed in Vishkuf attacked Chichonka with the cooperation of some Western Polish troops. They cooperated with Rudolph to attack the Red Army from north to south, and strive to eliminate the Red Army on both sides of the Bug River.

For Rudolf, if the friendly forces in the north can intercept the Red Army, then the pressure on him will be much less. He can make adjustments calmly and then flatten the enemy in one fell swoop.

So in the afternoon of that day, Rudolph's troops only carried out small-scale tentative attacks, more to test the Red Army's virtual and real firepower configuration. After one night's preparation, at 7 a.m. the next morning, after concentrating all artillery and obtaining support from the Air Force, a new round of offensive was launched.

The attack was first launched by Stuka. Eight Stuka fish jumped and launched an attack. The five hundred-pound aviation bomb blew Vokov into dust. After throwing the bomb, Stuka continued to dive and strafuse, causing considerable trouble for the Red Army.

Immediately afterwards, the German cannons began to roar, and strings of shells kept falling into the city of Wochoff, causing the small city to tremble continuously. In the words of a Red Army lieutenant who was captured in Wochoff and spent three years in the German prisoner-of-war camp, it said: "...The explosions of shells echoed everywhere, and the machine guns of Katakata, the rumbling cannons and the banging grenades intertwined into a tragedy of war... The air was filled with rolling smoke and flying dust. The strong light of the shells detonated at that moment flashed through my eyes from time to time. This is war, the real terrifying war!!"

"The position I am at is not at the forefront, but at a glance, you can see the enemy's infantry and tanks rushing over like a tide, like a black whirlwind. When this whirlwind constantly slaps your position, when your ears are filled with the screams and screams of comrades, you can't feel any hope except fatigue and fear."

The Germans did attack fiercely. The machine guns and mortars that covered the attacking troops made the Red Army in the trenches unable to raise their heads at all. The Red Army soldiers could only lean on the trenches and blindly threw grenades outwards. After throwing the grenades, they directly loaded the light mortar shells with fuses and threw them out. After repelling the German attack, the company found that they had actually thrown three base grenades and 60mm shells. At the front of their positions, they were full of German corpses. There were countless numbers.

Although the Red Army paid a great price. Berkyaev's reserve team was consumed and had to send the guards to the front line. Even the guards were not in trouble. When the defense line was shaking, Berkyaev gritted his teeth and issued the strictest order: "The task I received was to hold on to Wokhov until the moment when his superiors agreed to our retreat. Therefore, every inch of Wokhov's land should not be lost. I asked everyone to devote themselves to the defense in a veritable way.

Go in the battle. It is required that every soldier is not allowed to retreat, and to stick to every trench, every crater and every bunker. Once the defense line is broken by the enemy's tanks, the infantry should stay on the position and use all means to destroy the enemy's tanks in the frontier positions or the depth of defense... The honor of the soldiers lies in defending every inch of land entrusted to us. All the Soviet people are waiting for us to perform their duties! For the great motherland and for the hundreds of millions of Soviet people, Davarichs, please do your duty and persevere until the last moment!"

Some comrades may be surprised that they have been holding on for almost two days. Logically speaking, Berkayev and his young men are already very interested, so why not retreat quickly?

This starts with the battle on the other end of the Bug River. As mentioned earlier, Vishkuv's enemy suddenly attacked and caught Petrovsky off guard, making him unable to attack north with all his might. The afternoon before, a squadron of Stuka suddenly visited the Bug River and completely destroyed the pontoon bridge. At that time, more than half of the troops in Beloborodov had not crossed the river.

After a night of emergency repairs, the pontoon bridge was repaired. However, after dawn, the Luftwaff launched a series of air strikes, greatly delaying the speed of Beloborodov's crossing the river. It was not until four o'clock in the afternoon that day that more than half of the tanks were transported across the river.

"Damn German plane, just cause trouble for me!" Petrovsky was also tortured by the German Air Force and could only look at the sky and wave his fists.

Yet, since the outbreak of the war, the biggest enemy of the Red Army was not the German armored legion that shone brightly in the blitzing Poland and France, but the Luftwaffe. It can be said that more than half of the Red Army tanks and armored vehicles were destroyed by the Luftwaffe. And every time a critical moment, German planes would come to cause trouble.

After some thought, Petrovsky issued an order: "You can't delay the night, and order all troops to fight overnight!"

You should know that this is very unusual. For European troops, there is no tradition of night warfare, and they are naturally not good at night warfare. But then again, the organization of night warfare is indeed quite complicated. If you make a mistake, you will steal chickens and lose rice. This requires extremely skillful cooperation. Moreover, high-tech weapons, such as tanks and aircraft, are blind at night because of the lack of night vision equipment, and are almost useless.

Now, Petrovsky changed his usual routine and had to fight overnight. It is conceivable how nervous the time is. In his own words, "I can't afford to delay every second!"

After the sun set, the German Air Force that had been raging for a whole day finally disappeared. After a brief breath, he ate something casually. The Beloborodov's battle group embarked on the journey again. Their mission was to go straight north and force the Naref River. Just as they headed north, the battle of Wokhuv finally reached its last moment.

The two-day fierce battle caused heavy losses to the Bellgayev Battalion, which dropped sharply from more than 500 people before the war to more than 100 people. Please note that the reduction in the number of people here is not considered the wounded, which means that more than 300 people were killed in the camp!! Almost everyone in the remaining one hundred people were injured, and even the battalion commander Bellgayev was shot.

"Let the comrades be prepared to retreat." Bergayev asked the health officer to help change the dressings, and said firmly: "We must bring all the comrades with us, and we must never leave a comrade to the enemy!"

The breakthrough of the Bergayev camp was very sudden, because as of darkness, they did not show any intention of running away. Instead, they resisted the German attacks one after another, a style of fighting to the end. But no one expected that in the afternoon, Bergayev received an order to retreat.

The reason why Berkayev did not retreat immediately was very simple. Petrovsky told him that it would be better to buy an additional hour or two, and that when retreating during the day, he would inevitably face full pursuit from the enemy, and if not done properly, the entire army would be wiped out.

So Belljayev continued to hold his position with great perseverance until he issued an order to retreat after nightfall. Perhaps God thought Belljayev's camp was too brave and silently filled them with luck. The retreat was very smooth, and the German army had no reaction at all.

Berkyaev and the remaining more than 100 soldiers retreated to the banks of the Bug River. After joining the troops behind Petrovsky left by the German army, the German army reacted. It was just dawn at this time. In order to prevent being harassed by the German Air Force, Berkyaev's camp quickly crossed the river. However, no one expected that when Berkyaev's last one left the south bank of the Bug River, Stuka appeared, and a string of aviation bombs landed near him. After the smoke of gunpowder dissipated, the brave and warlike battalion commander fell in a pool of blood... (To be continued, please search for astronomy, the novel is better and faster!
