Chapter 60: Sneak to the Church
At around six o'clock the next morning, Eugen sneaked up and slipped out of his room. He did not wake up the servant, put on his usual clothes, and even put on a hat, trying to cover up a little, for fear that Margaret would discover his whereabouts.
But he was actually thinking too much. After all, this is the palace of the Habsburg family. Although the Medici family is not weak, they cannot arrange spies to the palace.
Then, under the shade of trees in the palace, Eugen came to the back door next to the side hall of the palace. Eugen passed here to the Hofburg Palace that day, and from here you could also go outside the palace.
In order to hide, Eugen did not even take the carriage in the palace, but hiked to St. Stefan Cathedral, preparing to find the Cardinal to discuss it first.
Margaret brought too much pressure to Eugen. In order to calm this matter, he had to negotiate with the Cardinal. Although so far, Eugen didn't even know the name of the Cardinal.
At the moment, he can only take one step at a time.
Half an hour later, just as dawned, Eugen arrived near the Cathedral of St. Stefan.
When he came here yesterday, he was the focus of everyone's attention, walking from the main entrance to the church like a hero. Now he is like a mouse, finding a small door behind the church.
He found out about this small door after asking a passerby. Every day, people would send fresh vegetables to the church, and this door was the one who walked through.
When Eugen came here, he happened to see a farmer wearing a cloth clothes and a headscarf, pushing a truck of fresh vegetables into the door. There is a three-inch high threshold under the small door, and the farmer's cart looks difficult to get over.
Eugen had an idea, walked over and held the cart with his hand and said to the farmer, "Come on, I'll help you."
As he said that, he pushed the cart hard. The farmer looked at Eugen with gratitude and exerted force under his feet. The two quickly pushed the car over the threshold.
After entering the small door, Eugen did not let go, but instead continued to push the car with a stance of helping others to the end. The farmer was naturally very happy. He said to Eugen gratefully: "God bless you, respected sir."
Eugen smiled at the farmer without saying a word. The cart entered the church and walked in and went straight to a vegetable cellar next to the kitchen. Along the way, I met several priests in black robes, but none of them noticed Eugen.
When he walked to the vegetable cellar, the farmer was also responsible for unloading the vegetables and transporting them inside. Eugen had achieved his goal and said goodbye to the farmer and turned around and left.
Of course he wouldn't just go out like this. He left the kitchen. Eugen found an opportunity to avoid the priests' sight and turned into the church. He didn't know where the cardinal lived, and he still needed to ask someone.
In order not to cause any commotion, Eugen watched all directions and tried his best to avoid the priests and walked towards the inside of the church.
Perhaps because it is a religious place, there are no guards in the church, and everything is in a free and open state. As long as you are a little careful, you can come and go here at will, and you have to worry about being caught.
Eugen was also quite happy to find out this situation. He thought to himself that perhaps these Christians would hand over the guardian work to the omnipotent God.
After walking around the church for a while, Eugen finally found a suitable target. A nun with a solemn face in his thirties was wiping the steps. Eugen recognized that she was the nun who helped him take off his cloak at the church door yesterday morning.
After looking at the surroundings, Eugen walked forward and coughed softly twice.
The nun heard the sound and raised her head to look behind her. After seeing Eugen, her face suddenly showed a shock, and her face pulled down and scolded, "Who are you? Why did you appear in the church? It's not time for the church development yet, go out quickly."
Eugen wore an ordinary dress when he went out. When he heard the nun's words, he knew that she regarded herself as an ordinary citizen. He pushed apart the collar and hair beside his cheeks. Eugen looked at the nun and said, "Hello, dear lady, do you still remember me?"
When the nun heard this, he looked at Eugen carefully, with a look of thought in his eyes. After a moment, she said in surprise: "You, are you Mr. Eugen? The one who was named yesterday?"
Seeing that the other party recognized him, Eugen nodded happily, then made a gesture of silence and whispered: "It's me, ma'am, what's your name? Also, please whisper a little, I hope my whereabouts can be kept confidential."
The nun knew that the man in front of him was a noble gentleman, so he nodded obediently and looked at Eugen and whispered: "My name is Closhya. What's wrong? Mr Eugen, is there anything I need my help?"
"Yes, Sister Closhiya, I hope you can take me to the residence of His Excellency Cardinal. Yesterday he asked me to come to him, and I am here now." Time was urgent, and Eugen did not be polite to the nun and made his request.
The nun was also very straightforward. She knew what the Cardinal had made with Eugen. He heard this and took Eugen to shuttle through the church.
Following the nun, Eugen did not have to avoid the priest anymore, but just deliberately blocked his appearance. On the way, the priests who saw them both looked puzzled, but no one came forward to inquire. This was of course the credit of Sister Closhiya's leading the way.
A moment later, the nun took Eugen to a remote house. The house was in a corner southwest of the church, and the walls had an old feeling, and the door was also a broken wooden door.
Eugen was a little confused. The house did not look like a bedroom, but rather like a prison. Could it be that the noble cardinal of the Holy See lived in such a simple place?
Sister Closia seemed to see Eugen's doubts and spoke, "This house is a holy place in this church, the house where Bishop St. Stefan lived. The reason why the Bishop lived here was also his own request."
Eugen nodded after hearing this, not to mention what his inner thoughts were. At least from the external behavior alone, the Cardinal was still very pious.
But this is what Eugen is afraid of. If the Cardinal is a stubborn and ignorant believer and refuses to cooperate with Eugen to lie, then he will really be exposed.
Sister Closia stood in front of the door and did not knock on the door. Instead, she made a gesture of inviting in and said to Eugen: "Please come in, Mr. Eugen. The Bishop has instructed that if you come, you can go in and find him at any time."
Eugen was stunned for a moment when he heard this. He always felt that the cardinal from the Holy See was a bit too friendly to him. For this reason, Eugen could only pray silently that this kindness could be maintained.
