In April of the third year of Chuping, Kong Rong, Shaofu, was ordered by Emperor Xian of Han, and led a caravan of 5,000 people. Under the protection of three thousand elite soldiers, he followed Antonio, the envoy of the Great Qin Kingdom, to open up a trade route with the Great Qin Kingdom.

In May, Han Zhan submitted a report to Emperor Xian of Han and appointed Xu Shu as the governor of Bingzhou, Tian Feng was the chief of Bingzhou, and sent Dian Wei to lead 5,000 troops to escort the two to Shangdang to take office.

In June, Xu Shu, Tian Feng, Dian Wei and others arrived at Shangdang with their troops. Zhang Yang, the prefect of Shangdang, learned that the new Bingzhou governor, had taken office and went out of the city to greet him thirty miles away.

In the same month, Yuan Shao, the prefect of Bohai, privately formed a battle to attack Gongsun Zan.

Gongsun Zan led his troops to fight, and the two sides fought a great battle in Zhuo County, south of Ji County.

Although Yuan Shao had powerful generals like Yan Liang and Wen Chou, and Shen Pei, Xin Ping and Xin Pi’s counselors, Gongsun Zan received the help of the three brothers Liu Bei. The two sides fought for one month and had a victory or defeat, and no one could do anything to each other, so they confronted each other in Zhuo County.

In July, Wuhuan Shanyu Tadun sent his generals, Nanlou, Su Puyan and Wuyan to attack in three groups, and at the same time attacked Xuantu County, Changli County and Liaodong County, forcing Gongsun Zan to draw troops to face the attack.

When Yuan Shao realized that Gongsun Zan had divided his troops, he immediately launched a new offensive. Gongsun Zan, who was short of troops, was not Yuan Shao's opponent, and had to give up Zhuo County and retreat to Ji County to stand firm. Taking advantage of Gongsun Zan's fear of fighting, Yuan Shao sent Yan Liang, Shen Pei, Xin Pi and others to attack Lelang County and Daofang County.

In October, Lelang County, Daifang County, Xuantu County, Changli County and Liaodong County have all become Yuan Shao's possessions, and the territory controlled by Gongsun Zan is the only place in Liaoxi County, Youbeiping County, Yuyang County, Shanggu County, Fanyang County, Dai County and other places.

Seeing that nearly half of the territory of Youzhou had fallen into his hands, Yuan Shao felt that Gongsun Zan was out of power. In addition, Liu Yu, the governor of Youzhou, died of illness, so he led the governor of Youzhou and issued a letter to the six counties, ordering them to surrender to him.

The matter of Yuan Shao leading the Youzhou Governor was soon spread to Yecheng, and Han Zhan summoned his subordinates to discuss the matter.

Guo Jia offered Han Zhan and reported to Emperor Xian of Han that Gongsun Zan was the new governor of Youzhou, asking him to fight to the death with Yuan Shao. After both of them were defeated, Jizhou sent troops to destroy Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan.

Han Zhan adopted Guo Jia's suggestion and asked Emperor Xian of Han to appoint Gongsun Zan as the new governor of Youzhou, so that he could compete with Yuan Shao and attack each other.

Gongsun Zan was appointed as the governor of Youzhou by Emperor Xian of Han, so he dispatched troops from Ji County to try to regain the land of the five counties occupied by Yuan Shao. From then on, the two sides started a two-year attack on each other.

In March of the fifth year of Chuping, Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao became exhausted after two years of attack on each other. Seeing that Yuan Shao could not take Gongsun Zan for a long time, he led his troops back to his royal court.

After learning that Tadun had led his army northward, Guo Jia advised Han Zhan that the time was ripe for seizing Youzhou was so hard that he could formally send troops to Youzhou.

In April, Han Zhan led Guo Jia, Ju Su, Zhao Yun, Huang Zhong and Zhang He to lead 150,000 troops to leave Jizhou and rushed to Bohai County in a mighty manner.

In order to fight Gongsun Zan, Yuan Shao had already drawn all the troops in Bohai County. Wherever Han Zhan passed, he surrendered. Han Zhan easily occupied the entire territory of Bohai County without any effort.

When Yuan Shao learned that Bohai County was lost, he was shocked and quickly ordered Yan Liang to lead 30,000 troops to fight. Although Yan Liang was very skilled in martial arts, he was a brave but not a resourceful person. He was beheaded by Huang Zhong outside Zhuo County.

When Yuan Shao learned that Yan Liang had died in battle, he knew that he could not stop Han Zhan's troops, so he followed Shen Pei. Xin Ping's persuasion and led his troops to the east, preparing to let Han Zhan's troops fight to the death with Gongsun Zan so that he could sit on the wall to watch.

Seeing Yuan Shao's troops fleeing far away, Han Zhan continued to march north to attack Ji County where Gongsun Zan was defending.

Gongsun Zan mobilized troops from Dai County and Yuyang County to reinforce, and prepared to fight Han Zhan to the death outside Ji County.

On the third day of the fifth month, Han Zhan's 100,000 army and Gongsun Zan's 120,000 soldiers started a melee outside Jixian County. Although Gongsun Zan had many soldiers, after the two years of melee, all veterans with combat experience died almost all the time. The newly recruits who were temporarily pieced together were not the opponents of Han Zhan's soldiers who had been through many battles.

Nearly noon, Gongsun Zan's troops were already showing signs of retreat. At this moment, a probe came to report to Han Zhan that because Gongsun Zan had drawn away the troops from Dai County and Yuyang County, the 50,000 Xiongnu army took the opportunity to break through the pass and head straight for Ji County. With two more sticks of incense, they would arrive at the battlefield.

After learning the news, Han Zhan immediately sent an order to order the army to stop attacking Gongsun Zan and turn around to deal with the Hun army going south. They must not let them harm the Han people.

Gongsun Zan also learned from the news of the Huns' army heading south. He wanted to retreat to the city to protect himself, but was worried that Han Zhan would take the opportunity to chase him. When he was in a dilemma, he found that the troops in Jizhou stopped attacking and retreated to reorganize the team.

After observing for a while, Liu Pu, he reported to Gongsun Zan that the troops in Jizhou stopped attacking, probably to deal with the upcoming Hun army. He also suggested to Gongsun Zan that he could take advantage of the melee between Han Zhan and the Huns to send troops to harass the rear of the Jizhou army, and that he might turn defeat into victory.

Unexpectedly, after hearing this, Gongsun Zan directly whipped over and cursed Liu Pu. He then ordered the entire army to stop all hostilities with the Jizhou army and join forces to deal with the surging Xiongnu army.

Two armies that were still fighting life and death not long ago, facing the Hun army that was surging like a tide, they tacitly gave up their hostility and worked together to deal with the invading foreign tribes.

After two hours of fierce fighting, the coalition forces of Han Zhan and Gongsun Zan finally successfully repelled the invading Huns.

Seeing the Huns' army returning in failure, Han Zhan also ordered his troops to return to the garrison.

The next day, Han Zhan left only 10,000 troops, led by Deputy General Huang Zhong, who stayed in the camp to monitor Gongsun Zan's movements, and he led a large army to advance eastward to attack the five counties of Youzhou occupied by Yuan Shao.

In August, Han Zhan's army captured the five counties of Youzhou. Yuan Shao fled to the Wuhuan royal court with his three sons, Wen Chou, Shen Pei, Xin Ping and others and fled to the Wuhuan royal court.

In September, Han Zhan brought the army that pacified the five counties of Youzhou and returned to the outside of Jixian County, preparing to continue attacking Gongsun Zan.

Under Liu Bei's persuasion, Gongsun Zan gave up resistance and took the initiative to go out of the city to surrender to Han Zhan.

Han Zhan accepted Gongsun Zan's surrender and ordered Ju Shu to act as the governor of Youzhou, leading the army back to Yecheng himself.
