The houses are all single-story, surrounded by a reclining house, a main house, and a wing room. The north house is the main house, and the houses in the east and west directions are the wing room, and the south door opens to the north, so it is called the "reverse room". Flowers, fruits and trees are planted in the courtyard for viewing.

The two-entry yard is divided into a front yard and a back yard, and the back yard is also called an inner house. The front yard is composed of a gatehouse and a downward house. The front yard is generally a hanging flower door connecting the front and back yards. Some relatively simple houses use moon doors, and the back yard is composed of east-west wing rooms, main houses, and veranda. There are also two-entry yards, such as Mao Dun's former residence in Beihua City, which does not have a hanging flower door to separate the front yard, but adds a back yard behind the main house, and builds a back room dedicated to women's family.

The complete courtyard is a three-entry courtyard. The first courtyard is a narrow courtyard where the downward house is before the hanging flower gate. The second courtyard is a wing room, a main room, and a veranda. The main room and the wing room can also be added. The third courtyard is the back cover room behind the main room. There is a door on the ear room on the east side of the main room, connecting the second and third courtyards. In the entire courtyard, the old man lives in the north room (upper room), and the middle is a large living room (center hall room), the eldest son lives in the east room, the second son lives in the west room, the servant lives in the downward house, and the daughter lives in the backyard, which does not affect each other. This also reflects the influence of the traditional cultural philosophy of the Xuanwu Kingdom, which reflects the "man outside and woman inside".

There are many combinations of four and five-entry hospitals, usually in the "front hall and back bedroom" style. The first hospital is the same as the third hospital, and the second hospital is the hall and the east and west wing rooms used for external use. Then a hanging flower door is set up to form the third hospital between the hall and the hanging flower door. After the hanging flower door is the fourth hospital where the main room and the wing room are located, which is the main courtyard. If there is a back cover room behind it, the fifth hospital is formed. Some people also build a row of south rooms on the north side of the downward house to form the four or five-entry hospital.

The largest depth of the Siheyuan in Beihua City is the distance between two alleys, about 77 meters. Some more luxurious courtyards even have gardens and rockery. The higher-level courtyards also have toilets, and these internal toilets are generally arranged to the southwest corner. According to Feng Shui, the southwest is the "five ghosts' land". Toilets can be built with filth to calm the white tiger. From a practical point of view, the toilet is built in the southwest to adapt to the northwest-southeast wind direction, which can prevent the odor from spreading in the courtyard.

The courtyard house is composed of many single buildings, including the main door, main room, wing room, etc.

The gate is also called the street gate and the house gate. It is a channel for the communication between the Sihe Courtyard in Beihua City and the outside world. It is generally built on the southeast side of the entire courtyard to give the meaning of "purple qi comes from the east". There is also a saying that it occupies the Xun position in the Bagua, that is, the wind position, which is the position of gentle wind and moist wind blowing in, to introduce southeast wind and block the northwest wind in winter. It is auspicious position and reflects the principle of "Kanzhai Xun Gate".

According to the status and level of the owner, the street gates of the courtyard are divided into several different shapes, including the royal palace gate, Guangliang gate, Jinzhu gate, Manzi gate, Ruyi gate, wall-style door (gate tower), etc. With the construction of the Western-style building, a large number of Chinese and Western-style gatehouses have appeared among the people, which are vividly called the "Suanmingyuan-style" gatehouse by the people.

As the name suggests, the gate of the royal palace is used for the royal palace, with the highest scale. Its size is usually: five rooms in the prince's palace (five rooms and three openings), and three rooms in the county palace.
