464 Shrink Frame

After the last meeting, Disney handed over the script of the sequel to Cole Grid. Since Lance was busy filming "Sin City", he never started to modify the script, let alone re-create it. However, Lance briefly read the script and found that it was not much different from the two sequels in the previous life.

So, Lance briefly explained his idea of the two sequels, and Eric's eyes gradually became deeper. Although it was not visible on the surface, his heart began to surge.

Sequel movies are a crucial part of Hollywood, especially after entering the 21st century, the gradual decrease in excellent original scripts has also made sequel movies pay more and more attention. On the one hand, the first movie has achieved success and accumulated a certain audience base; on the other hand, the character setting and story framework have won market recognition, and sequels can avoid more risks.

Simply put, the first element of a sequel is to make money, not creativity, nor art.

But how to shoot a good sequel is a question that almost every film company must consider. Universal Pictures, the first recommended movie that Hollywood is the one that knows the least sequel. Apart from the "Jurassic Park" series, there are almost no decent sequels. In recent years, the "Fast and Furious" series, the "Meet the Father-in-law" series, and the "Spy Shadows" series have achieved remarkable results. But objectively speaking, "Jurassic Park 3" is a disaster, and the "Fast and Furious 2" two years ago was far lower than expected.

Of course, Lance knew the later development trajectory. The "Fast and Furious" series almost lost all its vitality after the third part, and later revitalized its vitality in the hands of Chinese director Lin Yibin, which created a miracle. After the crushing defeat of "Jurassic Park 3", it was directly silent for fourteen years, and "Jurassic World" was reborn.

Even so, Universal Pictures is still the company that is the least likely to produce sequels among Hollywood's top studios.

How to make a good sequel? The current mainstream idea in Hollywood is that, first of all, the pattern must be larger, and it must be separated from the framework limitations of the previous work and placed on a larger stage; secondly, the story needs to be progressed, and it is impossible to always be revolved in place, either the plot is advanced or the relationship between the characters changes, and drama is inevitable; again, the cast is larger, the special effects are more magnificent, and the shock brought to the audience must be upgraded.

Of course, if you can innovate, it will be great, but the so-called innovation must be based on the framework of the previous work to avoid being out of the track of success in the previous work. All of this makes it extremely difficult to create a sequel.

In short, sequels need to follow the Olympic spirit, "higher, faster, farther" and "bigger" - film critics hate sequel movies, not just from an artistic perspective. Even if they only focus on the quality of commercial movies, most sequel works are difficult to satisfy.

But now, Lance runs contrary to the industry rules. Not only does it not have "higher, faster, and farther", but it also requires certain restrictions on the pattern, which makes Eric a little puzzled: Is Lance extremely smart or extremely stupid?

"So, what you mean is to eliminate all the seven pirates?" Eric's tone seemed very playful, without questioning, refuting, and surprised. He was just exploring, as if he was a neutral person, and did not support Lance's idea, but did not object, "Does this mean that the scripts in the third episode must be overturned and rewritten."

"Yes." After thinking roughly, Lance found that the script of "Pirates of the Caribbean 3: The End of the World" was too bloated. Just adjustments were made and the goal was impossible. The framework level adjustments were necessary. "My idea was to divide them into two branches, one was to go to the end of the world to save Captain Jack Sparrow, and the other was to command David Jones to dominate the world."

In an understatement, Lance cut the current "End of the World" script by more than half. Even if Eric was not the person involved, he couldn't help but take a breath, "But in this case, will the storyline be smaller than the second episode? The entire majestic momentum cannot be raised at all." Eric asked with a hint of curiosity that he was now really beginning to wonder: how Lance would modify the script - as for whether Disney agrees and how Jerry and others will fight, this is not what Eric is concerned about.

"No, my direction is like this. The first part is Captain Jack Sparrow fighting Barbosa, and the Governor is just a supporting role; the second part is the fight between two pirate captains and David Jones, the "Flying Dutchman". The ending is a loss-win situation. Captain Jack Sparrow was exiled to the end of the world, while David Jones was controlled by the Governor; the third part is a stage for opposition between the two parties, and the struggle for maritime hegemony will become the core idea."

This is the difference between Lance and Disney. He stood at a sufficient height to connect the three works so that the contents of the three works can echo each other, and at the same time, he will not aimlessly pour the story into a big picture, causing the entire series to become bloated.

"So, in the second part, we need to compress some pattern and concentrate all the special effects on the final life-and-death battle. In the third part, the end of the world needs to be one of the core contents, and we can be divided into two main lines, one is Captain Jack Sparrow's self-fight, and the other is the rescue team organized by Will and Elizabeth, where both sides gather together; the other is the Governor mobilizes David Jones and begins to sweep the various forces in the sea."

Eric was stunned. He was not a screenwriter, and his thoughts could not keep up with Lance. He couldn't help but frown, "Wait, then in this case, won't the seven pirates still exist? Sweeping the sea power, are these different pirate forces?"

Lance chuckled and shook his head, "No, in the original script, the Seven Pirates were one of the protagonists. They united against David Jones, and then waited for Jack Sparrow to appear. But the problem is that Jack Sparrow did not appear half an hour before the story. God knows that the reason people watched this movie was for this cunning and evil captain, not the pirates who could not remember the name. This not only weakened Captain Jack Sparrow's main position, but also the large number of pale and powerless characters would only make the story boring."

Eric was stunned, "Then what you mean..." He could vaguely understand Lance's idea, but from the producer's perspective, he was still worried that the situation was too small and the scene was too small to support the final chapter of the trilogy.

"I think that the so-called seven pirates can become cannon fodder. We can give them names, but we don't need to shape characters, because these characters will eventually become the objects that David Jones crushed. The Governor gradually realizes maritime hegemony. These cannon fodder characters are used to create a sense of urgency. On the one hand, the end of the world saves Captain Jack Sparrow and has many difficulties. On the other hand, the Governor is destroying the world. Two senses of urgency gather together. After Captain Jack Sparrow escapes from the trap, he reaches his peak when he fights with the Governor and David Jones..."

When Lance said it normally, he did not continue talking, but looked at Eric with a smile. This time Eric understood completely, "It really triggered all the orgasms."

If according to what Lance said, the framework structure of the entire story is reduced, but the pattern created is a step further than the previous two episodes, especially the creation of the atmosphere and rhythm control, which will completely explode when the climax comes. This will undoubtedly make the film more refined and exciting. More importantly, this can also make the trilogy complete, not too out of the frame, and not too conservative.

Before this, the scripts of the three works "City of God", "After Day" and "Murder by Borrowing a Knife" were all from Lance, and Oscars were nominated for two consecutive years. But these are all things in a literal sense. Today Eric truly felt Lance's control over the script, with endless ideas emerging, and his control over the framework and rhythm can be seen. At the last meeting, Jerry believed that the success of "After Day" was just a coincidence, and more of a victory at the publicity level, but Eric did not agree at this time. Lance's directorial ability was far better than expected.

"But why do you do this?" Eric couldn't help but continue, "I mean, I understand what you mean, but... why? Isn't this more troublesome? And it's even more difficult in the process of writing the script. The control and preparation of this line at the end of the world will become extremely difficult."

If you write according to the original concept, the script will actually become very simple. The seven pirates and new characters such as the witch only need to be written along the storyline, and the script can be completed soon without much time. But now Lance obviously caused trouble for himself, gave up the shortcut, and chose to challenge himself.

"Because Captain Jack Sparrow is the soul of the success of the movie." Lance's answer made Eric think.

After nearly twenty years of disappearing, why can Pirates reap the glory of relied on "Pirates of the Caribbean"? The industry's internal followers, and Lance's statement is also one of them.

But more people still believe that maverick adventures, the unique protagonists, the Iron Triangle and the charm of a number of supporting roles are the criteria for success. Therefore, when creating the script, the screenwriters added many scenes to the first popular character Barbosa, and added more personalized supporting roles.

However, Lance now proposed another idea, and his voice was so unwavering. Eric couldn't help but begin to believe that Lance was right.

Thinking of this, he raised his head and looked at Lance carefully. What was surprised that he was not Lance's talent, but Lance's firmness and confidence. Even after just twenty minutes of conversation, he was convinced in a blink of an eye. Obviously, Lance was not just a simple director or screenwriter.

Thoughts circled around in my mind, Eric said, "I heard that the director of 'X-Men 3' has changed his candidates again. I heard that Thomas is very optimistic about you. It seems that you will be dizzy when you choose scripts in the next period of time. I hope we have the opportunity to cooperate."
