325 Inspiration
Lance was still unable to sleep in the end. When taking a bath, a chaotic brain flashed. Lance remembered the movie "Clockwork Orange", which gave him some inspiration. So he then flipped through the original comic of "City of Sin" and had a vague concept of the core of the script in his mind.
As the most important violent classic work in film history, "Clockwork Orange" can almost be said to be the Bible of countless filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino. This work transcends moral thinking and bloodily displays the cruel status quo of society.
The story of "Clockwork Orange" itself is not complicated. It tells the story of the evil teenager Alex. After being imprisoned, in order to regain freedom in advance, he voluntarily became a test subject for "disgust therapy". Under this treatment method, Alex became a person who did not fight back or scold him, and was released from prison. However, after being released from prison, Alex was bullied, violent, and even imprisoned by the so-called "justice", becoming a tool to realize justice.
The whole movie reveals the hypocrisy and moral destruction of society in a long film filled with violence. People's attitudes towards violence and code of conduct are a contradictory complex. On the one hand, they oppose violence but on the other hand, they use violence to fight violence. In the face of the so-called "justice", human nature no longer exists, and all behaviors have become carriers for realizing justice. Morality, law, violence, and government have become tools for hypocrites to justify themselves, and even strongly criticize the so-called "freedom", full of profound ridicule of social politics.
This core idea is not consistent with the Sin City trilogy constructed by Lance. In fact, Lance did not discuss the problem so profoundly. Lance's artistic cultivation has not reached such a high level yet. However, Stanley Kubrick's expression of using "violence" to scold "violence" and using "justice" to mock "justice" has inspired Lance.
In the "City of God", everyone is just and not evil, because in this world, children cannot find an outlet, and the indifference and isolation of society have made them lose the ability to judge right and wrong. They can only blindly explore the world with their incomplete knowledge. The so-called violence is just a basic means of survival for them. So in the story, no one feels that this is evil, but instead thinks it is natural. This outlook on life, world view, and values that regard evil as justice are precisely the most thought-provoking thoughts in the movie.
In "killing with a knife", justice and evil correspond to it, but the evil side represented by professional killers is the general idea of society, interests are the first and selfish. As long as it is for one's own interests, it can be forgiven by any means. This is a dark world constructed by "Rashomon". In the end, evil devours justice and only a broken hope remains.
In Lance's conception, the hope of "City of God" is positive. A Pao left the City of God and became a photographer; the hope of "killing people with a knife" is faint and slim, and prosecutor Anne escaped. But her five tainted witnesses have been killed. It is an unknown whether she can trip over Felix as planned.
Extended to the "City of Sin"
Lance can completely fight justice with justice like the "Clockwork Orange"; or mock darkness with darkness like the "Rashomon". Put it in the "City of Sin", then it is to fight evil with evil.
All justice characters can be eliminated in the story. Each character has two sides. They are evil. There is no difference between police and thugs. Law and sin help each other. Justice and evil are confused. Therefore, the characters appearing in the story are very interesting. The police representing the justice side is dirty, the MPs are greedy, while the gangsters representing the evil side are sincere, while the prostitutes are brave. The so-called villains representing the justice side, they bravely stand up to fight the violence of the state machine, but they are not simple positive characters themselves, and the methods they use are also bloody and cruel.
To fight evil against evil is not to make the world better, because they advocate violence, ignore the law, and be lawless. But at least they will not be too dirty, disgusting, and completely inhumane.
In other words, the hope of "City of Sin" is dark, no longer the bright golden sunshine, no longer the beautiful future after the sun rises. Even if evil defeats evil, the world is still evil, dark, and terrifying. The only difference is that whether the world is dominated by bad people or by more evil bad people, even if order is re-established, it is also an iron-blooded, chaotic, cold, and cruel order.
This is the most ironic place. This society is so bad and hopeless. The so-called justice can no longer protect society. It can only rely on evil to achieve this goal. This is the most sad thing. Just like those cold and alienated people, the only way to protect themselves is to learn to refuse care, to learn to refuse sympathy, and to refuse to give. Only by being cold-blooded and ruthless can one survive.
What a ridiculous and sad fact, and what is the root cause of all this? It is precisely indifference, selfishness, and insensitiveness. This is like a Mobius ring. Human beings are constantly repeating their mistakes, and things are endlessly circulating and cannot escape this vicious circle.
If such a profound and complex connotation can be expressed, not only "City of Sin" will become a classic work, but the sin trilogy constructed by Reims will also win its own place. But the problem is that this is not an easy task, more accurate, it is an extremely difficult, extremely difficult, and extremely complicated matter.
The "City of Sin" in the previous life can be seen with some connotations, such as using violence to defeat violence and using black to defeat black. However, the visual impact and violent scenes of the movie are too shocking, and it attracts all attention away from the main point. Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and Frank Miller were not able to further explore the theme core. This is correct for their version of "City of Sin", because according to their ideas, "City of Sin" has been built into a carnival visual feast, bringing the charm of the movie to the extreme.
But, Lance doesn't intend to do so.
If Lance wants to make "City of Sin" the finale of his trilogy, the first thing he must do is to reshape the characters. To be more precise, it is to inject soul into the characters, and then rely on the characters to complete the construction of the City of Sin, further promoting criticism and reflection on society.
The script of "City of Sin" in the previous life was composed of three stories. In order to create a powerful and violent color, the film deliberately cuts off the character's timeline and puts each character into the story, allowing them to become part of the story, rather than discussing the character's past, present and future.
This is the right way to do it, because too much space of character introduction will weaken the integrity of the story and the rhythm of the narrative; but Lance believes that this movie means that the character should be completely separated. On the contrary, the character should be injected with a more complete soul outside the script, so that the character can be vivid and echoed with the story. Just like what Lance did in "killing with a knife".
The story of "Killing with a knife" hardly explains the ins and outs of Vincent, but in the confrontation between Vincent and Max, Vincent's past became his conceptual composition and collided with Max, thus completing the complex construction of the story.
For example, in the story of "Sin City", the policeman Hardigan played by Bruce Willis, why did he look at the eleven-year-old girl Nancy, and why did he desperately save Nancy? Is it because of some pain in his past? What happened to Muffle played by Mickey Ckey Rke, why did he become so ugly, and why did he miss the bar all day long; what did Nancy played by Jessica Alba face after being kidnapped, and how did she fall into the bar and become a dancer
None of these contents will appear directly in the movie, but the background stories of these characters are the composition of the entire city of sin. They can not only build the background of the story, but also build the entire world. Just like "City of God", the protagonists of the movie are the entire slums, but the personalities, lives and images of those characters are derived from this land. Their every move gives the entire city of God vitality.
However, this is a very large project.
Paul Lins spent ten years writing the original novel, and Lance spent nearly three years adapting the script. Now, Lance needs to build the entire Sin City again, and the project is unimaginable; however, Lance did not feel a headache, but on the contrary, he felt happy because he finally found the starting point. He finally had a further idea of "Sin City", and he finally had a complete idea of the Sin Trilogy.
So, Lance did not sleep well. After taking a shower, he began to think. When Percy called, he had only time to improve a basic idea and did not have time to consider the specific details. Then he had to go to the crew to start today's shooting.
After reaching the extreme of fatigue, Lance became energetic, but his brain was running at high speed all night, which made Lance feel a little drowsy. Next, he needed to re-enter the shooting of "killing with a knife", so Lance needed to be sober.
After driving to the shooting site, Lance first drank a cup of espresso at a coffee house in a nearby neighborhood, and then bought a cup of black coffee, and then walked to the shooting site.
From afar, Tom Cruise came up with a bit of solemn expression. Although there was a smile on the corner of his mouth, he couldn't get rid of it. The worry between his eyebrows seemed to be asking: Are you okay, and it's not to be continued.
