277 Preliminary preparations

Vincent is a professional killer, so he can't be too conspicuous; Max is a taxi driver, so he must not be glamorous. Although Max's appearance does not have a strict impact, considering the tone of the whole movie, Lance believes that Max must not be shining. ◇↓

Especially considering Max's personality - hesitation, indecisiveness, and lack of confidence, he did not dare to pursue the woman he liked, but could only hide in the corner and watch the other person in a turbulent manner. Even if the other person gave his phone number, he did not dare to dial the phone. In the face of the oppression of the taxi company, he was always silent, dared not speak out, and used to swallowing his anger. He knew the streets and alleys of Los Angeles, as if it was an activity map, and even the time of the change of traffic lights was clearly understood, so he could clearly estimate the point-to-point running time...

So Max is more like a nerd or otakus.

After careful consideration, Lance not only restrained all his aura and tried to keep himself low-key, but also changed his style. Originally, Lance only wore glasses, but later found that the overall effect was not up to expectations, so Lance found Edgar Snow.

Edgar was introduced to Lance by Percy Brandley. He is only 30 years old this year. He was born in special effects makeup before - that is, to help actors make up into werewolf, vampire, zombie and other professions. Of course, special effects makeup covers a wide range of coverage. The simplest special effects makeup is to put on fake beards, or human body/body/painting. It is a very advanced but increasingly unpopular profession. Later, Edgar transferred to a stylist, especially in the styling era, and had just begun to explore the field of independent films.

After carefully studying the role of Max, changing the hairstyle is the advice given by Edgar. Although Lance still had a skeptical attitude towards Edgar, he did not doubt the person, but did not use it. In the end, Lance cut his hair short, which was surprisingly good.

Before Tom arrived today, Lance actually finished makeup and wandered around Paramount Pictures for more than an hour, almost not attracting much attention. The biggest feature of Lance's makeup is not to change his appearance, but to weaken Lance's sense of presence. It seems that he will not attract people's attention even if he disappears into the crowd.

"Yes, this style was designed by Edgar." Lance pushed Edgar out according to Tom's words. "So, Edgar will work with you to design a style suitable for Vincent. The ultimate goal is to go on a walk on the nearby streets, don't hide it deliberately, no one recognizes you within three hours. Then you will succeed."

Lance's words made Tom choke, but when he thought about it carefully, he couldn't refute it. Because in the movie, Tom needed to achieve such an effect; and this was also a starting point for thinking about the performance style - Tom remembered Lance's almost disappeared just now. Even if Lance overturned the coffee cup and deliberately attracted his attention, he did not recognize Lance immediately. This is the most admirable thing.

Although Tom had heard Wade mention that amazing audition, Tom felt that Wade must have exaggerated it. How could one turn into another person after wearing glasses? This is simply ridiculous! However, the experience just now made Tom realize for the first time that this was possible.

"Where are you?" Tom thought Lance would join in the discussion of styling.

Lance shrugged, and the smile on the corner of his mouth revealed calm control. After getting rid of Max's role, he returned to his original appearance. "I have other preparations to do, I hope I can wait for your good news." After that, Lance patted Tom's arm and turned around and left.

Edgar nodded to Tom and followed Lance's footsteps, "Are you sure this is OK?" Edgar asked in a low voice. He was just a stylist with no experience, but now he was trying to direct a top star like Tom Cruise. He seemed a little confused.

In fact, Lance arranged the scene just now, deliberately. As Lance expected, Tom brought his own team - even though Tom had completed the signing and handed over the confirmation right, Lance would not naively think that Tom had become a doll at their mercy. Therefore, if Tom wanted Tom to respect Edgar's opinion, Lance had to come up with evidence, which was the clever design just now.

Lance gave Edgar a smile, "I believe we are all in the same position. For him, you or me, are not worth mentioning." This sentence made Edgar chuckled, and looked at the deep eyes seriously, like the sunlight after the rain, and his pupils were stained with a layer of translucent gold. Then Edgar nodded, "Don't worry, leave it to me."

Lance's footsteps did not stop and turned away. Edgar stayed there for a while, adjusted his breathing, and walked back again.

Lance did not stay. On the one hand, this is not his major, and he specializes in his profession, just like photography, lighting and other work, and his styling is the same. He needs to consult a lot of information. If necessary, he even has to analyze the influence of color and psychology. Lance does not think he can help too much; on the other hand, it is indeed because he has other jobs to be busy with, and it is a crucial job.

After leaving Paramount, Lance drove to Sunset Avenue and saw Hayden Hunter standing on the road from afar. He was wearing a black and white skateboard under his feet, wearing a pair of denim mid-trousers and a leopard-print long-sleeved hat, completely dressed like a sporty teenager.

Lance pulled the car aside, Hayden opened the door and threw the skateboard into the back row. Before the person could get on, the voice came over, "You are the director of the box office of 200 million yuan now. Are you sure you don't plan to change a car?"

Lance's car is one of Ford's most sought after models. The Mustang Shelby GT500 launched in 1967, a retro convertible roadster in red. However, Lance is not a retro model renovated in modern times, but a genuine original version produced in 1967. The engine and some parts have been replaced, bringing the word "retro" to the extreme. Lance bought this car after completing the release of "two big smoke bongs" in 1998. I don't know how many hand cars it is, but it has now become a part of Lance's life.

"People who really know how to appreciate will not say this." Lance did not go to see Hayden, but released his handbrake and drove the car back to the road again. In fact, such a retro car is truly valuable now. When he visited Tom's house last time, Tom praised the car. "If you like new cars and Albert knows the agent of the car dealer, you can pick and take a look."

Hayden was obviously not interested in the topic of the car, so he curled his lips and looked out the window, "Didn't he say, are you going to talk about work today? How about it, where are you going?"

"Drift." Lance left Sunset Avenue and drove towards the downtown area. "All scenes of the movie were held at night, and 60% of the scenes were filmed outside the shed. Do you have any plans for the lighting?" Today, Lance came out to communicate with Hayden about photography and lighting arrangements, which is crucial to the tone of the entire movie "Borrowing a knife to kill".

"Light?" Hayden frowned slightly, "Don't you want to use the night view top light?"

Because of the outdoor scenes of "killing with a knife", almost all of them are achieved in taxis, and some of them are chased, and the tone of the movie is crime dramas. In the past decade, the night scene scenes of action-type films and crime-type films have been mainstream.

The so-called top light is simply understood as the light directly above the head, which shows a 90-degree perpendicular angle with the camera. Generally speaking, top light must be avoided to photograph people, because under this light, the top of the head, forehead and nose are very bright, and other parts are completely under the shadow, creating an abnormal and strange form.

However, it is different in night scenes. Because the light of the night is too bright, it will be distorted, and it will be blurred if it is too dark. After using the top light, the limbs and shapes of the characters can be completely outlined with light, and the lines of the characters' faces will be more edges and angular, which will highlight the confrontation between the characters. This is the most suitable for shooting racing, fighting, and chasing scenes.

In fact, in Michael Mann's version of "killing with a knife", the night scene uses top light, which is also his most passionate shooting technique. Then, through the change of camera perspective and the power of editing, the purpose of setting off a tight atmosphere is achieved. It is undeniable that this is the correct way to shoot, but Lance always feels that this method lacks a little thriller and the metaphor he hopes to achieve.

Just like using Mark Ruffalo to play Richard, Lance hopes to complete the metaphor of the script through the picture. He wants to use the combination of light and dark contrast of the picture and poetic slow motion to outline a cold violence that is bloody but sufficiently withdrawn.

Because in the "Borrowing a Knife to Kill People", most of the scenes are conversations between Vincent and Max. Even if there are some fighting scenes, Lance does not intend to shoot too bloody, and may not even appear directly in the picture. However, it is precisely in this calm and calm atmosphere that Lance wants to show the sense of oppression conveyed by the huge world, and the effect of psychological depression caused by the ubiquitous but invisible cold violence.

This is a language hidden in the camera lens. There are no lines, no fights, no confrontation, and just a shot, which invisibly conveys the psychological oppression. But this plays a crucial role in the hidden allusion in the background of the story "killing with a knife".

So, Lance hoped to change the way of using top light, but the problem was that this was not Lance's profession, and he didn't know how to express it. Then he chose to take a ride in the city of Los Angeles with Hayden, trying to achieve the goal of making Hayden understand through changes in city light.
