245 Sculpting the Script

Since interviewing Tom Cruise, Lance has adjusted the script. In the past period, he has devoted almost all his energy to the busyness.≧

The core of the theme of "killing with a knife" is very profound. The story shows the sadness of fate and the fall of morality in modern cities, and finally highlights the insignificance of human beings and the coldness of society. Lance hopes to dig out this theme, even deeper, and take a step closer to the sin society shown in the "City of God" and carry out more dialectical thinking.

If you want to achieve this goal, character setting is just the first step. Lance must also reset a main line of thought and combine the characters' dialogues, actions and story twists, unexpectedly, which is a task that tests the script's skills.

"Yes, I noticed." Peter still had a gentle face, as if his elders were caring for his juniors' work and studies, and was kind and kind. "But I don't quite understand why you modified the ending. If Max saves Anne according to the development of the story, and then Vincent is abandoned in the subway and disappears into the prosperity of the metropolis. This is undoubtedly a good choice." Peter turned to look at Shirley, then looked at Wade and Brad, as if seeking everyone's opinions.

Sure enough, everyone focused their eyes on Lance, and the invisible pressure poured towards Lance's shoulders, making him feel breathless in an instant.

Not only was Lance not timid, but instead spread his shoulders slightly, letting his straight back lean forward slightly, and spoke confidently and calmly, "Because I hope that through this script, the indifference and cruelty of society will be further revealed, and the deep meaning of the story is deeply explored." Lance's voice was neither too slow, neither too humble nor too arrogant, and his calm and powerful voice unknowingly took the attention of others in his hands.

"I borrowed from Ryunosuke Akutagawa's 'Rashomon'. Do you understand this story?" Lance looked at the three listeners in front of him. The expressions of the three people did not change at all. It seemed that they understood the story. Lance had no intention of further explanation. If they really didn't know how to pretend to understand, it would be beneficial to him. "I just hope to show the philosophical principles in the story of 'Rashomon' by 'killing people'. Everyone interpreted the world from their own standpoint, their own perspective, and their own interests, so that the truth was buried, morality was abandoned, and order was disrupted."

Regardless of whether they really understand "Rashomon", at this moment, they were all looking at Lance seriously. The slow tone made people slowly immerse themselves in it, and the thoughts in their minds began to think together with Lance's rhythm. "For example, Vincent in the movie, he believed that people die every second in this world, and the people he killed were just one of them. Even if he did not kill, wars or diseases that were far away were plundering life, so he did not feel anything wrong; for example, the gangsters in the movie, they believed that interests were the most important, so they did not give up their means for profit, and what they did was no different from Wall Street or ordinary blue-collar workers, but they just had different ways of obtaining benefits."

Brad looked at Lance's blue eyes, and the deep and quiet light flashed with a stream of wisdom. He could also see a hint of cunning and evil. The plain words seemed to be just talking about the script of "killing with a knife". But it always made people feel a little disgusting - as if Reims' words mean something, satirizing Paramount's behavior today. In fact, there is no difference between Vincent and the gangster, but they just stand on their own and do whatever they want.

Brad wasn't sure if he had realized it wrong, but Peter obviously didn't think about it. He said directly, "This is purely dog/shit! This is just a quibble by people to protect their own interests!"

"Yes, that's what I mean." Lance smiled and said happily, and could see Shirley's expression from the bottom of his eyes. His eyes were unpredictable, and he obviously felt very turbulent inside. "It's like the Iraq War, under a banner, but in fact it's for another purpose. This is a politician, isn't it? He used some high-sounding excuses to conceal his true purpose, but also used moral and law to package it, and lived with dignity."

Brad could feel Shirley's eyes fluctuating, and the eyes that almost condensed into a substantial sharp blade wanted to dismember Lance. But Lance was not timid at all. Instead, he showed a puzzled look and looked at Shirley boldly and directly, as if he didn't understand what was going on. All the content he said was closely linked to the script of "killing with a knife". This caught Shirley off guard, and she had to let herself do it, so she could only smile and embellish the peace.

Lance's simple move almost made Brad laugh out loud.

Lance was still behaved when he got the cheaper. He opened his eyes wide and looked at Shirley, as if saying, "Do you have any questions?" Shirley had to raise her chin with a smile, and said actively, "I think this theme is very interesting, so is this the core idea of the script?"

"Yes, this is what I want to express. In the face of egoism, whether it is illegal or moral or damage to their interests, this will become their stepping stone. People's values become extremely fragile. It is natural to think that the interests of others are the medium to satisfy their own material and spirituality. In a broad sense, most of human evil deeds can be said to be egoism based on some reason, which reverses black and white, confuses right and wrong, and does everything evil." Lance stopped when he saw the good news and once again pulled the topic back to "killing people with a knife" and "Rashomon". "It's like the main characters in the story, Vincent, gangsters, dirty police/polices, tainted witnesses...everyone is like this. This is also the fundamental reason why the entire society gradually falls into a city of sin."

"Indifference, everyone is indifferent to others; selfish, everyone is only thinking about their own interests; alienation, everyone lives in their own world. Therefore, when an old man dies on the subway, it takes six hours to discover it; so, when criminals have enough money and power, they can escape the law. The gloomy, damp, withered, cruel, and broken Rashomon is the depravity and transformation of human nature in modern society."

After Lance finished speaking, Peter fell into deep thought, while Brad and Shirley were thinking, but a little absent-minded. Obviously, Lance's words were too informative, and the subsequent effects caused were completely different - the inevitable result brought by different positions, different jobs, and different majors.

"But you haven't said why you modified the ending and the story structure of the second half." Wade was speaking, and he had no intention of continuing to think about the content of Lance's words. These metaphysical things are actually nonsense to Wade.

Lance was not upset, but moved forward, then raised his hands, placed his left hand up and down the ground, and then raised his left hand, "This is Vincent," and compared his right hand, "This is Max. In the story, Vincent obviously represents evil and indifference, while Max represents justice and warmth. If according to the fixed Hollywood model, it is welcome to see the happy ending of justice over evil. But I set different settings for the two characters."

This is also the subtle adjustments made to the two characters after Lance and Tom talked, which plays a crucial role in deepening the script.

"Vincent looks calm on the outside but panic inside," this represents the current situation of society. It looks calm on the surface, but the dark tide below the sea level has never stopped surging. "Max is confused on the outside and calm on the inside," this represents the state of people. They usually seem to care about everything, but in fact, they are clear about the moral bottom line and the definition of justice in their hearts, but they are not willing to burst out. "In the first half of the story, Vincent uses *Max, but in the second half, Max uses calmness to defeat Vincent."

While speaking, Lance's left hand began to go down and his right hand began to go up, and finally collided together, vivid and vivid, but the connotation was far from that simple. "So, this led to the ending of three different versions of the story."

Lance raised his left hand, "Vincent finally won the victory. He killed Anne and also killed Max, killing the last little hope. But the ending of this version is too dark, too desperate, and the philosophical significance seems too rough. I have also considered that Vincent finally let Max live, but... it is still somewhat different from the overall style of the work." Vincent chose to forgive Max, which means that evil will eventually have a day to be good. This idea is good, but Max's personality will appear incomplete - justice will survive under the evil minions?

Then Lance raised his right hand again, "Max won the final victory," Brad nodded vigorously, which was also the original ending of screenwriter Stewart Beatty. "This is too simple and crude, weakening the core of the story itself, and the afterglow is too short, almost equivalent to wasting all the preparations in the previous stage." It even made the metaphor of "Rashomon" become irrelevant.

Lance put his hands together and then put them down, "In the end, I considered the third ending. Max and Vincent died together, but Anne, who Max tried his best to protect, survived, and Anne would continue justice to the end." Anne is the prosecutor in the story. She holds all the evidence to prove the gangster and is also the most central witness.

In fact, Lance also thought about this ending for a long time, which also means that Max, who represents justice, still wiped out the evil plan at the last moment, but this hope is still too thin. In fact, it has the same effect as "City of God", and hope always exists, but whether it is Apao or Max, they are all single and weak, and are not enough to change the entire society.

In a cold and evil society, kindness and justice always exist, but relying solely on one or two lonely heroes, there is no way to change the status quo. This is also the core idea that the two works "City of God" and "Killing with a Knife" run through the whole process.

This also echoes the "Rashomon": the darkness and depravity of society are not formed in one day, and similarly, the justice and hope of society are not returned in one day.
