Chapter 106 Shipbuilding (1)

However, the Japanese government is very welcoming to the massive influx of Chinese students and has formulated some convenient policies to facilitate the study and life of Chinese students in Japan.

Of course, the Japanese government will not be kind enough to cultivate talents for China, but has its own plans. First, a large number of Chinese students will be able to promote domestic consumption in Japan and increase Japan's income; second, the Japanese government can also support anti-Qing forces among Chinese students. If it can be used by Japan, it is better to cultivate a leading party. Even if it is not the leading party, it can be put back to cause trouble for the Qing court when necessary, and can also be used as its own bargaining chip. Therefore, the Japanese government does not It only did not restrict the activities of anti-Qing groups, but also provided convenience for them. It also provided certain support and assistance to some influential anti-Qing groups. After the failure of the Reform Movement of 1898, the Japanese government hosted Kang Youwei, Liang Qiliang and others, allowing them to organize royalist associations overseas; some Japanese politicians and more prestigious groups established private friendships. For example, the Xingzhong Association established by Dr. Sun received some Japanese funding; and Dr. Sun himself had good personal friendships with many Japanese politicians.

Of course, although the Japanese government has brought a lot of private goods when dealing with Chinese students, it is objectively beneficial to the development of revolutionary forces at that time. Many revolutionaries were able to avoid the pursuit and persecution of the Qing court in Japan. Moreover, since Japan is very close to China, once something happens, they can return to China within a few days. In the old time and space, Dr. Sun was able to gather revolutionaries and launch uprisings many times in China, which is not unrelated to the fact that Japan is the base.

However, overall, the quality of Japanese students is far less than that of European and American students. The masters or scientists of the Republic of China in the old time and space were mostly from studying in Europe and the United States. On the one hand, this is because most Japanese students are self-funded and have different quality. Anyway, as long as they have money, they can go abroad. There are also many of them who only want to go abroad for a layer of money. The starting point is poor, and the achievements will naturally not be high. On the other hand, the Japanese education level in this era is indeed not very good, because it is the level of middle and high-end education.

Moreover, the Japanese government also played a lot of small moves from it. First of all, Japan's first-class universities basically do not accept middle school students, but are accepted by second- and third-rate universities. The subjects are open to Chinese students, mainly humanities, art, medicine, and culture, while disciplines such as science, engineering, physics, and machinery are strictly restricted; while the restrictions on military learning are even greater. Chinese and Japanese students are taught separately, and many important things are not taught at all. Even if they are taught, there are many mistakes. The so-called "When Jiang Baili studied in Japan, he won the sword of the Japanese Emperor with his first place in graduation" is just a rumor and it is not a fact at all.

In addition to these reasons, Chinese students themselves also have considerable responsibilities, because most of their own students have good families and are willing to spend money. However, China and Japan have similar cultures, and Chinese students adapt to the customs and habits of Japan very quickly. Because of the temptation to Japan's customs, it is indeed difficult to resist. Although they cannot "plant Han flag on Mount Fuji", they can "drunk beards under the cherry blossom tree", and naturally they will inevitably be invincible for flowers, wine, snow and moon.

Of course, no matter what, the overall quality of Japanese students is still very high in China in this era, and there are indeed many patriotic and passionate young people. Otherwise, Japan would not have become a base for anti-Qing revolutionaries. Moreover, Mianhua Surika and Gan Revolution are not inconsistent. The group of acists who launched the Meiji Restoration in Japan were almost the same. Therefore, for time travelers, Japan is indeed a rich mine of talents.

Now there is someone who has been to Japan and has some friendship with anti-Qing groups, so this plan can be started first.

Xia Simin didn't think much about it. He now had a good impression of the East China government and wanted to do something for the East China government. In addition, Xia Simin also believed that if the East China government could join forces with Japan's anti-Qing groups to negotiate major affairs, he also agreed happily. Moreover, Xia Simin was a person who was quick to act, so he immediately set off for Japan. The East China Government did not try to retain it, but he still gave Xia Simin two thousand taels of silver as his fund for his activities in Japan.

However, the East China government did not have direct flights with Japan, so the East China government first sent Xia Sibu to Shanghai, and the Shanghai New District arranged for him to take a boat to Japan.

A few days after Xia Siming left Shandong, the East China government welcomed a new batch of guests, a fleet from Germany, with a total of 12 cargo ships, 7 of which were loaded with materials and equipment for building warships in Qingdao, as well as workers who came to Qingdao to help the East China government build ships, and the other five were all machinery and equipment ordered by the East China government from Germany.

It turned out that this was a contract signed by the East China government and the German Kiel Shipyard and the Bromfos Shipyard. Two warships will be built in Qingdao. The two shipyards formed a engineering group and purchased the first batch of materials and sent them to Qingdao together with other cargo ships to fulfill the contract obligations.

The business delegation of the East China Government in Germany and the delegation supervising the shipbuilding have also been transmitted to Qingdao by telegrams. It should be said that the work in Germany is progressing very smoothly. Of course, this is the Germans who have always been reliable in their work, and it is no exception in this time and space.

As early as after the representatives of the two shipyards successfully bid in Qingdao, they had already begun to arrange ship platforms, organize factories, prepare materials and construction equipment, etc. in Germany, and even booked a batch of supporting equipment. Therefore, after the representatives of the two shipyards returned to Germany, the shipyard engineers spent a week familiarizing themselves with the drawings, formulated construction schedules, etc. First, they started to lay the first keel at the Kiel Shipyard, and temporarily named it the Qingdao cruiser, with the project code number No. 01; five days later, the Brom-Foss Shipyard also officially started construction, with the project code number No. 02.

At this time, the German Navy Technology Department also conducted a test. It turned out that although the design drawings of this type of warship were sold in Germany, they were still half-believing about the performance of this type of warship, so they hoped to build a model ship at a ratio of 1:10, because the total length of this type of warship was nearly 130 meters, and the model built at a ratio of 1:10 was 13 meters long, and it was equipped with a small engine. It can be used to test whether its performance was as good as overseas Chinese said. The Navy Technology Department also suggested that the Queen Victoria Louise-class protective cruiser be used for comparison.

The Queen Louise-class protective cruiser is the latest first-class large protective cruiser built by Germany. It is 110 meters long, 17.4 meters wide, and has a displacement of 6,700 tons. However, its power is only 10,000 horsepower, so its speed is only 19 knots. As a protective cruiser, it is indeed a bit of a good speed. However, the tonnage of this type of warship and Qingdao type ship is roughly the same. If you build a model ship at a ratio of 1:10 and install an engine with the same power, you can still compare it. Moreover, it will not cost much money to build these two models.

The German Navy also notified the East China government's decision to the shipbuilding delegation, hoping that the delegation would also participate in the test. This request was supported by the delegation. After all, the performance data of this type of warship was only obtained using a computer model, and if a model could be built to test it, it would be clear. The construction work of the model was handed over to the Kiel Shipyard, because the Victoria Louise-class protective cruiser was built at the Kiel Shipyard.

It has to be said that the Germans are indeed very efficient. In just two weeks, two model ships were built, using wooden iron shells, and the power was made of diesel engines, and a 47mm Hakis gun was installed at the bow of the ship. Of course, it was just similar in appearance and the internal structure was not done. Each model ship was operated by 4 people, and was named Qingdao Model Ship and Queen Model Ship respectively.

Kiel Shipyard has its own test pool, which can be similar to artificial waves that are about 5-level sea conditions. The test is based on three levels of empty load, half-full load, full load, and other values of ship speed, wave resistance, seaworthiness, rolling under different sea conditions. The German Navy Department and the East China government supervised shipbuilding delegation participated in this test.

The first test was the sea conditions at level 0-1. The sea conditions at this level can basically be considered normal weather and have little impact on navigation. Therefore, the main test was speed. The speed of Qingdao model ship in three states is obviously much faster than that of Queen model ship, and it is almost a complete victory. However, when firing, the rolling degree of Qingdao model ship is much greater, because it is in an unloaded state.

Then test the sea conditions of 2-3. This level of sea conditions can only be considered small. Of course, it still has a significant impact on the two model ships with only more than 10 meters. They basically cannot fire. However, the wave resistance and airworthiness of the Qingdao model ship are obviously stronger than that of the Queen model ship, but the rolling degree under no load is still larger than that of the Queen model ship, but the difference under full load will be significantly reduced.

Finally, a level 4 sea condition test was conducted. The sea condition of this level was not very large, but it was very dangerous for a model ship of more than 10 meters. If it was not done properly, it would capsize. In this sea condition, the Queen model ship was hit by the bow of the waves for less than 5 minutes and was overturned and sunk. However, the Qingdao model ship was able to last for nearly 15 minutes, and even had waves on the bow several times, but it could jump out immediately, showing extremely strong wave resistance. The Queen model ship could only stay strong for more than 15 minutes under full load, while the Qingdao model ship could withstand the storm of this level of sea condition under half full load.

The test was already over at this time, but at the request of the East China government's shipbuilding delegation, the Qingdao model ship conducted another level 5 sea condition test under full load. It was mainly to see where the limit of the Qingdao model ship was. Although the Qingdao model ship did not hold on for 2 minutes in this test, the waves on the bow were burying out twice in a row, and it was only after the third time that it was overturned and sunk by the wave head. This was far better than expected, because during the level 5 sea condition, ordinary small sail fishing boats would not go out to sea.
