It is generally believed that the AN/APY-9 used by E-2D can reach more than 550km in the target detection distance of the interceptor transmission surface of 3~5 square meters, and can automatically suppress ground clutter and interference.
As early as the APS-145 radar used in the E-2C era can track more than 2,000 targets and guide 40 batches of aircraft to engage in combat. It is conceivable that the E-2D's AN/APY-9 should have been greatly improved on this basis, at least two generations advanced, and it is conceivable that the capabilities of its electronic equipment are extremely powerful.
In addition, E-2D can be connected to other aircraft, warships and sensor platforms through data links. The addition of this two-way voice and data communication system can greatly expand the US military's super horizon detection capabilities.
The research and development technology of carrier-based fixed-wing early warning aircraft is very difficult. The main problem is how to maintain the performance of electronic equipment while the volume is limited, and it also takes into account the take-off and landing and use on aircraft carriers.
Therefore, this is why the technical level of E-2D is still ahead of countries around the world. This early warning aircraft can theoretically conduct long-distance monitoring of maritime aircraft, cruise missiles and even ground vehicles. It is E-2C and E-2D that constitute the key force for long-range air defense warning of US aircraft carriers.
Except for the United States, no country has independently developed and actually equipped fixed-wing carrier-based early warning aircraft.
