Chapter 2 Old Sheriff White

Gu An, who was wearing thin pajamas, stood up from the haystack tremblingly, patted the hay branches stuck to his pajamas, and ran after him.

The floor of the cell was paved with stone slabs, and Gu An stepped on them with his bare feet, as if he were stepping on ice. He stood on tiptoe awkwardly, gasping for air with "hiss~hiss~".

Outside the cell, there is a dark corridor. At the end of the corridor on the left side is a wall with a tall and narrow window.

At the end of the corridor on the other side is a staircase leading upwards, and it is a solid wooden staircase.

The figure of the old police chief holding an oil lamp had already climbed up the steps. He didn't even mean to wait for Gu An. His heels clicked on the wooden board and made a crisp "ta, da" sound.

Gu An quickly chased after him and followed the old police chief up the stairs. As he walked up the stairs, the light began to get brighter.

What caught Gu An's eyes was a small police station, with an orange light bulb hanging on the beam and brown wooden floors.

There is a desk not far from the police station door, a solid wood bookcase stands next to it, and there is a burning stove in the middle of the wall on the other side.

The old sheriff put out the oil lamp and hung it on the back of the chair. After pulling out the chair and sitting down, he opened the drawer of his desk and took out a booklet.

"Write down your strange name, register it, and then you can leave."

As the old police chief spoke, he opened the slightly yellowed book, turned to a blank page, and pushed it towards Gu An with a pen.

Write your own name again?

This time I wrote it by hand.

Upon hearing the old police chief's request, Gu An's mind wandered, and he inexplicably remembered a movie, "Su Qi'er, the No. 1 Warrior" starring Mr. Xing.

In the movie, when Su Qier was taking the martial arts exam, he relied on his own strength to defeat the conspiracy and successfully won the martial arts championship. When the protagonist was filled with joy, the emperor simply asked him to write down his name.

It was such a simple request, but because Su Qier was illiterate and couldn't write his own name, the emperor found out that Su Qier had cheated and ransacked Su Qier's home, making all his efforts in vain.

What does this story illustrate?

It shows that without knowledge...

Alas, no!

Gu An quickly caught his thoughts that were drifting to the horizon, picked up a cold pen, and was about to write his name.

"Bang——"

With a muffled sound, the door of the police station was suddenly pushed open, and a tall man wearing a brown parquet shawl and a brown cowboy hat walked in.

The cold wind outside the police station followed the man and poured into the police station. The flames in the fireplace began to swing. The books on the table were blown by the wind.

"Fuck!"

Holding a pen in his hand and bending down to write his name, Gu An was startled by the sudden cold wind and couldn't help but speak.

"Hiss, close the door! Close the door quickly! Hiss, I'm going to be cold to death!"

The old police chief couldn't help but frown as Gu An yelled. He patted the table and shouted in a loud voice: "Hank, close the door."

Hearing what the old police chief said, the man in the cowboy hat, Hank, grinned, turned around and slammed the door of the police station shut again.

"There wasn't such a strong cold wind yesterday. This damn weather is like a female cousin who changes her face after receiving the money. Don't you think so? Old White?"

Hank's tone was bohemian, but his voice was like a newscaster's. His Mandarin was very standard and full of magnetism.

"Call me Sheriff."

"Okay, Chief White."

Well, how should I put it?

Watching two foreigners communicating in standard Mandarin in front of me.

It's really weird.

Take another look...

Still feel weird.

As he spoke, Hank adjusted his cowboy hat that was originally held low, revealing his blue eyes that were covered by the wide brim of the hat.

Looking at Gu An with curiosity and exploration, Hank touched the messy beard on his chin, and a kind smile appeared on his tough and handsome face.

"Hello, alien visitor, do you know that last night it was me and Chief White who discovered that you fell from the sky? Because you and I didn't sleep well all night, we kept guessing about your identity and origins."

"Ah? Really, haha."

Seeing Hank suddenly talking to him, Gu An replied with a dry smile, a little embarrassed, but in his heart he was cursing the system for being useless.

You think it’s not good to just travel through time and replace a character who is almost as handsome as me?

What happened out of the sky and how embarrassing it makes me now? Even if I can explain it now, if I want to complete a lie, I have to tell more lies.

"Ah."

The old sheriff's sneer sounded at the right time. He took out an oil paper bag from the drawer and threw it to Hank, his voice a little strange:

"Is there anyone who still doesn't know that being too curious is not a good thing? Hank, I advise you to mind your own business first."

After catching the oil paper bag, Hank put it into his arms, patted it with his hand, looked at Chief White with a smile and said: "Old White, you always like to put on such an annoying appearance.

You look like that, no wonder the kids in the town don’t like you."

After finishing speaking, Hank didn't wait for Old Sheriff White, whose expression turned grim, to speak. He arrived at the door in a few steps, waved to Gu An and Old Sheriff White, opened the door of the police station and walked out.

.

With a "pop" sound, the door of the police station was closed again.

Old Sheriff White sat on the chair, watching Hank leave with a touch of elder care in his eyes. However, after realizing that Gu An was looking at him, the old Sheriff's expression quickly turned cold.

"What are you looking at? Write your name quickly and leave quickly."

As he spoke, the old sheriff got up from his chair, walked to the cabinet, and started rummaging around.

Boots.

What a good person.

This Sheriff is such a good guy!

After taking over the clothes and boots, Gu An was so cold that his nose had runny nose and he was speechless.

The text on the booklet was all in Chinese. Gu An breathed a sigh of relief and wrote the words Yan Shuangying in Chinese. After registering, Gu An wrapped his coat tightly and wore some oversized deerskin boots.

Ready to leave the police station.

However, just when Gu An was about to open the door of the police station, the old police chief stopped him again, walked over expressionlessly and handed Gu An a small bag of copper coins.

After taking the bag of money that was still warm, Gu An felt that his eyes were getting warm.

It was obvious that he was just a stranger, or even a stranger with a particularly suspicious origin. What this old police chief did really made Gu An feel warm in his heart.

"Thanks."

Gu An bent down and thanked him seriously, "Don't worry, Chief White, I will treat these as if they were lent to me by you, and I will pay them back in the future."

Old Sheriff White didn't speak, he just waved his hand, then turned around and sat back in his chair.

...

Unlike the warm and bright police station, not only was the wind biting and the sky outside the police station so gloomy, it was impossible to tell whether it was early morning or dusk.

There were a few pedestrians passing by on the nearby streets. They all lowered their heads and pressed their hats with their hands as they walked forward against the howling cold wind.

Gu An didn't have a hat, and his long black hair was messy in the wind. The cold wind hit his face, causing pain like a knife. He had no choice but to lower his head and block his forehead with his elbow, and walked hard.

.

On both sides of the street are buildings and bungalows with red bricks and white tiles. Their doors are closed, and only the signboards hanging in front of the doors are swaying in the wind.

Grocery store, gun shop, harness shop, small clinic, cloak shop, tavern, butcher shop...
