2. Rice and wheat are suitable

In the past, when we were in Jingyuan, the overall situation was that the land was vast and the population was sparse, which was often mentioned in the Tang Dynasty or the Laws. There were few people and many deserted fields. Therefore, the most urgent task was to recruit manpower to reclaim wasteland. Of course, the farming method should be based on extensive farming and win by laying volume. Therefore, when Gao Yue was in Bailicheng, he promoted the "interplanting method", which was to divide the land into two pieces, one piece of winter wheat, the other piece of corn, inter-planting beans, and buckwheat. The purpose was to plant a wide range of plants and harvest more.

However, in Xingyuan Prefecture, Liangzhou, the situation has changed significantly. Several counties in Hanzhong area have a much denser population than the northwest. The fields that originally had complete water conservancy have been occupied by civilian fields, vocational fields, and other fields. If you want to build military camps, you can only start with saline-alkalied deserted fields such as Shanheyan, Chiyaguan, or from remote areas, such as Yuehe Valley in Yangzhou and Huangsha River in Mian County. The scale of the fields must be carefully calculated. From "kuanxiang" to "narrow township", the way of land camping will naturally undergo major changes, that is, "reseeding" rice and wheat.

Re-planting means planting two or even three crops of different crops, such as rice and wheat, in the same field according to the growth and harvest seasons.

This way, you can use limited land to obtain the maximum amount of income.

However, there are different types of rice, and the sowing period can be divided into three categories: morning, high and late. After double confirmation of theoretical and practical experience, Master Mingxuan told Gao Yue: In Xingyuan Prefecture, the production cycles of early rice and medium rice are in conflict with winter wheat, so late rice and winter wheat are most suitable for ripening twice a year.

Of course, Gao Yue now knows that the early rice and late rice in ancient times are actually different from the early rice in modern contexts. Early rice and late rice in modern contexts are more distinguished by growth cycles. The shorter one is called early rice (90-150 days), and the longer one is called late rice (180-200 days); while in ancient times, it was more distinguished by sowing seasons. Early rice is planted, and late rice is planted.

Therefore, when the Baicao Army of Xingyuan Prefecture set out, the state soldiers, Baicao Army families and others began to sow winter wheat seeds on the land where the tide of Shanheyan and Chiya Pass were receding in September and October last year. According to some agricultural books, wheat should be planted in August, but Master Mingxuan said that Hanzhong belongs to the Jianghan area and is warm in winter. If wheat is planted too early, it will encounter "land silkworms" and cause the wheat to grow wildly too early, destroying the harvest of the next year. Therefore, planting wheat should be postponed by about one month later.

After May of the following year, the wheat can be harvested after ripening. Before the wheat harvest, the rice seeds will begin to soak the wheat seeds. At the same time, the late rice will be replanted. Four or five months later, after the late rice is mature, winter wheat can be planted again, which will be repeated, which is to mix the rice and wheat.

In addition, this arrangement has been made, including the painstaking efforts of Gao Yue and Master Mingxuan, which can effectively "avoid taxes".

What, can you avoid taxes when farming?

That’s right, let’s listen to Gao Shaoyin’s story:

The two tax law of my Tang Dynasty is like this: collecting two taxes in summer and harvesting hukou and rice in autumn. The latter just perfectly covers the maturity of late rice. That is to say, Gao Yue’s military camp in Xingyuan Prefecture only needs to pay 30% of the late rice into the warehouse before the end of autumn, and then send it to the capital. In addition, three-quarters of one meter of grain from the jurisdiction field are sent to the capital's Censorate (the reason will be discussed later). In addition, the rest can be stored in the Chiya Warehouse in Xingyuan Prefecture, except for the other rice in the capital.

The winter wheat planted in the military camp perfectly avoided the date when the imperial court collected hu of rice. Therefore, Gao Yue said in the "A Letter to Encourage the Military and Civilians in the Palace" written by Xingyuan Prefecture that if you plant wheat, the court and the government "do not collect the taxes and do not blame the rent. Whether it is one stone or ten stones, they will all belong to them and the people will benefit from it." This is the origin of the tax avoidance of wheat planting.

This is even stronger than before in Jingyuan Yingtian. At that time, because the Yingtian was under the leadership of the Duzhi Department of the imperial court, no matter what it planted, it had to be given a fixed proportion to the Duzhi Department's patrol. The Shannan West Road where Xingyuan Prefecture is located is the same as other towns. The income is divided into three ranks, and the ranks that go out to offer to the court should be given to the military government (Xingyuan Prefecture is now a small shogunate), and the prefectures and counties are dominated by the prefectures and counties. The greater the profits of this development, the more you get.

In addition, the price of wheat is higher than that of rice and corn, which is really profitable.

However, after this document was published, the rural people in Xingyuan Prefecture did not respond very much, no matter the rich or poor. Gao Yue had long noticed that the people in Xingyuan Prefecture were very insensitive to advanced technology and systems, and were full of the mentality of being at ease with small wealth. When he built Zicheng, wharf and shipyard, many wealthy families in the city did not believe it very much. Now Hanchuan is open to land and land, and merchants are everywhere, so this group of people knows its benefits well.

However, Gao Yue was not in a hurry. If the people were not active, I would first promote it in the military camp. As long as the military camp could gain great benefits, the people would naturally compete to follow suit.

At this time, when Gao Yue and others walked to the road in front of the field, they looked at it and finally saw clearly how Master Mingxuan coordinated the conflict between the two crops on water when mixing rice and wheat.

That is "high-grade wheat and flat-planted rice".

Digging the soil to build high first is to "high tract". A soil ditch naturally forms between the two sections of high tracts. This is "接". First, use the tract to attract the water in the canal and irrigate it appropriately. After planting wheat on the tract, cut off the tract, drain the floating water and the water in the soil layer to create a wheat favorite high-cool and dry environment. This is "high-cool and wheat planting";

After the wheat is ripe and harvested, dig the high flakes and fill them into the flakes. In this way, the fields will go from high to low, and then drain water to store water, so that rice can be planted on it, which is called "flake rice planting".

Therefore, the mountains, rivers and dams that Gao Yue and others saw were all high and scattered like chessboards, which was very beautiful. They were covered with wheat seedlings that were about to grow joints, like green waves, covered with the beautiful white mist in the mountains of Xingyuanfu.

As long as there are two rounds of late rice, salinization can be completely improved here, because rice is the most salt-killing one.

In the fields, Baicao Army, Zhou soldiers, and Huaixi soldiers were mixed but not chaotic. Their families also rushed to oxen bought from the Xifan Mushi and used the iron blade farm tools trained by the iron officials in Chenggu, and worked hard.

Since the peace talks between the Tang and Tibets, the mutual markets in Jing, Yuan and Long areas have suddenly emerged. On the one hand, it was strongly imported from Xibo, and coupled with the vigorous domestication of the Dangxiang in various states, the price of cattle has been lower and lower, and Xingyuan Prefecture has purchased a large amount of livestock.

But Gao Yue was still not satisfied, so he called the former King Pu's idle official. Now Sun Tongxuan, the pastoral supervisor of Xingyuan Prefecture, selected familiar people from the Huaixi soldiers and set up a "mule yard" and began to breed mules, horses, mules, donkeys and mules, the former can be used for military purposes or farming, while the latter can be used to pull a cart.

Now Sun Tongxuan is very prosperous. He was originally a poor family in the third grade. Since he heard Gao Yue's words, he had received thirty pieces of cloth of various colors just by serving the Prince of the Pu. Now he has learned animal studies. After becoming the Mass Supervisor, he has 14 stakes of salary, clothes and money for one month. Not only did he manage his house in Xingyuan Mansion, he also married the daughter of a postmaster. Now he is ready to take off.

With Sun Tongxuan's example, all the poor households without land in Xingyuan Prefecture, who were thirty thousand,700 third-class households were eager to try, and they were all arranged by Gao Shaoyin.
