Chapter 12 Raid on Corfu Island

At dawn, the sky in the deep winter is still dark and dull. Coupled with the hazy fog, nothing can be seen on the sea around Corfu, perfectly blending with the darkness. The beach on the island is the "border" of Corfu, with sentry towers here, and the dim fire light barely illuminates this corner. But more of it is just a decoration. The sleepy sentry dozed off and didn't seem to worry about the dangers they might encounter.

But it is no wonder that a year ago, about a thousand Genoese were driven out of the island by them, and all the pirates on the Adriatic sea belonged to Venice, and there was no threat at all at sea. Epirus, the only possible attack, is now unable to take care of himself and lacks ships to transport troops. Instead, he became the target of Venice's control of pirates to loot villages and towns to obtain huge benefits. The pirates fought one place and attacked them freely. Without looking at it, they knew that the Greeks must be very funny now.

The Venetians now enjoy the strategy of harassment and robbery, and they can gain huge benefits without taking huge risks in person. As long as the Byzantine generals faced with no intention of counterattacking and progressing, they can continue to rest assured on Corfu.

Unfortunately, their good days are destined to come to an end today.

Taking advantage of the night and fog, the skillful Genoa sailor touched the black palm and avoided the dangerous reefs. He approached the shore of Corfu without knowing it, while the Venetians were still sleeping unconsciously.

The waves slapped the reefs, and a small boat first came ashore, and more than a dozen Turkic warriors carrying arrow bags and scimitars jumped from it. These mercenaries who followed Justinian for a long time can be said to be Justinian's most trusted ace. They slowly touched the Venetian sentry by the sea without knowing it. Soon, the dozing sentry was dealt with silently without any movement.

On the ship, Justinian saw the signal of Turkic subordinates waving with torches on the sentry tower, and then nodded at Bantik.

“Safe on the shore, everything is ready.”

After receiving the young man's confirmation of the answer, the man finally breathed a long sigh of relief. Sure enough, these people under Justinian were truly famous. Waving at his subordinates, Bantik finally issued an order to attack.

"Everyone is ready to attack and must keep quiet. Those who violate the orders engage in military laws!"

The Genoese soldiers were waiting for this moment, and they fought side by side with the Roman army from Molia, Epirus and Turkic mercenaries.

At dawn, huge ships disguised in hazy fog were moored on the coast of Corfu. The cabin slowly opened, and the soldiers came out of the dull cabin and breathed the fresh sea breeze. The Genoese were very excited, and after a year, they finally set foot on this land and revenge the Venetians who seized this place from them.

Unfortunately, they could not roar now. In silence, the army composed of Genoa and Rome gathered together under the command of Justinian and Bantic toward the three forts controlled by the Venetians on Corfu. As long as they conquered this place, the island would return to Genoese control.

"Does the capture of Corfu mean that Genoa and Venice have officially started a war?" Justinian asked intentionally or unintentionally in the darkness. If this action was successful, it would be difficult for the Venetians who suffered such a great loss to swallow their anger."

However, Bantik shook his head and looked at the young man beside him meaningfully and replied: "Of course not. At that time, both of us and the Venetians occupied Corfu on the surface were pirates. Because it was legally the territory of the Roman Empire, both sides were in the name of suppressing bandits when attacking. No matter how much they suffered, they could only swallow it. Last time we suffered a silence, and now it was the Venetian turn."

"So that's it." Justinian chuckled subtly. He had already guessed that the conflict between Venice and Genoa had not yet intensified to the later stage. Although the two sides are playing secretly, there is still room for room for them. However, the weak Byzantine Empire has become the victim of all the sufferings. If you want to reverse all this, you must first pull Genoa into the water as soon as possible, and just forming an alliance is far from enough. Justinian made up his mind, and at this time, the coalition forces suddenly stopped.

"As long as you pass through here, the Venetian stronghold will be in front of you. This will inevitably be a fierce battle." Bantik seemed to be talking to himself, and as if he was asking his subordinates to prepare mentally in advance.

When the coalition forces were facing a dense forest, this was the natural barrier for the coastal defense of Corfu Island. Passing through this was the fortress on Corfu Island. If you fight head-on, you will undoubtedly encounter ambushing the defenders who were prepared and suffered heavy casualties. Fortunately, the Venetians were not prepared this time, but this does not mean that everything is as safe as you see.

A Turkic warrior jumped up and rushed into the woods quickly. He ran at agility speed like a cheetah. However, the moment the Turkic man stepped into it, he was stared at by a pair of eyes.

Is it an enemy? Or something else...

Without thinking, beside the rock behind a big tree, a Venetian siege soldier raised the crossbow in his hand without hesitation. However, his crossbow arrow had just aimed at the Turkic warrior running at a very fast speed. A bow and arrow broke through the air in the darkness. Before he could react, the Venetian vanguard was shot and killed on the spot.

Justinian sneered at this scene: "It seems that the Venetians are really cautious. They have always kept their hands. If they hadn't been prepared, we might have really wanted their words!"

Their prey was indeed cautious, but if they had the garrison map provided by the inside line, Justinian and the others knew the existence of the whistle at first. This directly led to the lack of meaning in his eyes of these carefully designed arrangements.

The Turkic warriors under Justinian were separated for a team. They followed each other one after another, setting a distance apart. The people in front attracted the attention of the Venetian sentry, while the people behind shot arrows to cover and pulled out the target. Only a few struggling screams were heard. After a while, none of the Venetian secret whistles were left were pulled out.
