Chapter 6 The Book of Mysteries
There is no doubt that the witch wearing glasses at the "Wonderful Zoo" was right at the time.
The toad that Matthew bought was even more noisy than he thought; it almost stopped screaming since he returned to Room 13 of the Burnt Cauldron Bar.
This situation almost makes people unable to stay in the room.
Finally, Matthew came up with a solution, hang the glass box containing a toad on the balcony of the room, and then close the window, and the whole world became quiet in an instant.
It was almost noon, and he walked out of the room and went downstairs to have some simple lunch.
However, it was obvious that the lunch was not pleasant, because a strange man who almost wrapped his whole body in a thick wool coat came to his seat next to him (you know, it's August now). From the appearance of the other party, he looked very much like an "old witch".
"Old Witch" ordered a plate of bloody pig liver, then opened its bloody mouth, and ate it in front of Matthew with relish.
Fortunately, Matthew's psychological quality has always been pretty good and he has not spit out the things he had eaten before. He even finished a baked potato in front of the other party.
After climbing back up the dirty and old wooden staircase, Matthew looked at the other rooms on the second floor.
In addition to him, there seem to be several children around the same age as him on this floor.
They should be the same as him, a freshman from Hogwarts who was born in Muggle.
But Matthew was not in a hurry to "get to know" them, and he went straight back to his room.
...
After returning to the room, Matthew first sorted out all the things he bought this morning and put them in different categories.
Then, he took out the whole cardboard box of magic textbooks handed to him by Lihen Bookstore and moved it to the wooden table.
Tear open the seal on it and take out the Hogwarts textbooks inside one by one.
"Standard Spell·Level 1"... "Primary Transformation Guide"... "Black Magic·Self-Defense Guide"...
These textbooks are similar to the content of the original Harry Potter book in my memory.
There are also four quills... two bottles of black ink and a bottle of red ink... a large stack of letter paper...
Suddenly, Matthew Wakefield's movement stopped.
Because he found that at the bottom of the carton, there was something-
Another book.
It is not thick, and the cover is definitely no more than half an inch (note: about 1.77cm), which is much thinner than any previous Hogwarts textbook.
The appearance of the book shows a simple texture, and the paper looks a little yellow from the side, which is likely to be something that has been around for some time.
The cover and back cover are made of a strange leather, which makes people feel a little creepy for some reason.
The whole book makes people feel indescribable.
Matthew was stunned and told him intuition that the thing in front of him might be very dangerous...
"What the hell is this?" He frowned and withdrew his hand that was frozen in the air.
He reached into his pocket and took out the previous parchment list that had been kneaded into a ball.
I carefully compared it, and what was written on the list was with what I just took out of the carton.
There is no mistake, the strange book at the bottom of the carton is not on the list; that is, it shouldn't have appeared here at all.
Matthew did not act rashly, and he did not even take the initiative to touch this book of unknown origin, because he did not forget that he is now in a magical world.
Even an ordinary diary may have the consciousness of a powerful black wizard, enough to manipulate the wizard trying to use it...not to mention the mysterious book in front of you, as if the word "danger" is written on your face.
Matthew took a deep breath and finally decided to make a more cautious choice.
He gently rang the butler bell in the room.
A minute later, the door of the room was knocked and opened.
A hunchbacked figure appeared at the door of the room. It was Tom, the thin and shriveled bar owner who had lost all his teeth.
"Mr. Wakefire, do you have any instructions?" he asked with a smile, although his smile was rather ugly.
"Law, sir." Matthew said: "Can you help me throw this cardboard box and the things inside into the trash can?"
He pointed to the carton with the Lihen Bookstore trademark on it.
"I'm happy to serve you!" said the bar owner.
He walked into the room and picked up the cardboard box.
Looking at the hunchbacked old man, he took out the cardboard box and the things inside, and then walked down the stairs.
Matthew suddenly felt relaxed, as if there was some fatal danger and left him.
...
In the afternoon and evening, Matthew was in the room, looking through the textbooks at Hogwarts.
Although I don’t have a magic wand at hand, I can only talk about it on paper and cannot be put into practice at all.
However, even if you look at it briefly, you can see some clues.
Magic is not as I had imagined before. It only takes a few silly waves of the wand and shouts a few Latin words from my mouth.
It also involves control of emotions, mastery of subjective consciousness, and complex gestures that change according to different situations...
In short, it is much more difficult to master a magic skillfully than Muggles imagined in previous lives.
It was not until the bell rang in the middle of the night that Matthew put down a copy of "Thousands of Magical Herbs and Mushrooms" in his hand.
It's time to take a break.
However, before going to bed and extinguishing the lights, Matthew remembered something.
That was his new pet, the toad he just bought this morning, is still hung by him on the balcony outside the window.
It's time to get it back.
Speaking of which, he hadn't even named the pet... or for the sake of how happy it was before, he would name it "excited".
While thinking about it randomly, Matthew smiled, opened the window and took back the small glass box hanging on the balcony.
The toad's scream no longer remembered. It seemed that the little guy might have adapted to the environment here.
The light green firelight of the fireplace illuminated the small glass box in Matthew's hand.
The smile on the boy's face frozen in an instant.
The poor toad did not scream, and it would never scream again.
It lies flat in the glass box, with its white belly facing the sky, and its dark eye sockets formed two huge bulges...
No more moving, no more tweeting, no longer life.
Apparently, it has been dead for a long time.
"How could it be..." Matthew murmured to himself. What surprised him the most was not the death of the toad, but-
Just under the toad's corpse, he saw a book.
A book that is almost impossible to exist in this glass box.
He appeared inexplicably at the bottom of the carton in Lihen Bookstore, and then asked the mysterious book that bar owner Tom threw away by the carton.
The sky outside the window suddenly turned into a cold black and gray color; a ray of crimson moonlight shone through the window on the floor of Room 13 of the Broken Cauldron Bar.
