Section 7 Highland Defense (2)
I followed the wooden step and walked down to the cover. The smoke filled the room that was not very spacious, making the room with poor light dim. It was only after I could see clearly that a tall soldier stood up straight, almost touching the top board above his head, and then he saw a wooden table with an officer next to the table holding a telephone headphone in his hand.
"Comrade Commander," because the light in the room was too dark, I couldn't see the rank on his shoulders. When I raised my hand to salute, I could only say vaguely: "I am Sergeant Oshanina from the Air Defense Command."
The tall officer didn't say anything, but pointed to the stool next to him and gestured to me to sit and wait for a while. Then he turned his face and stared at the person who was calling with a serious expression.
I walked over and sat down, and the sound of the officer calling came clearly. "·············································································································································································································"
"The militia division will not retreat." The voice from the microphone interrupted his words. "Instead of complaining here, it is better to think carefully about how to use the troops in your hands to defend the defense line and not be able to retreat at all."
"But, comrade Colonel, have the militia seen German tanks rushing in front of them? Have they ever been fired by machine guns? Seeing such tanks crawling towards them, and there are planes pressing down on their heads, they will show their true colors! When they see the tanks turn around and escape, they can't stop them by any publicity and agitation. Please believe the words of an old soldier!"
"Enough, Comrade Captain." The colonel's angry voice came from the microphone. "Who gave you the right to insult the militia division? They are all working class in Leningrad. As long as they are alive, they will persevere on this land, and no one will escape from here."
The captain who called him hesitated for a moment, then quickly changed the topic and said: "In yesterday's battle, our battalion lost more than one-third of its personnel. I don't want to tell lies, the soldiers fought very bravely. But we can't stand the next attack and should supplement our regular troops, even if it's a platoon...."
"No more, Captain," the colonel's voice eased a lot. "I have no reserves on my hands."
The captain finally put down the phone in disappointment, and the tall officer next to him couldn't wait to ask: "What do you say to the division commander?"
"What else can I say? Forces are needed everywhere. If regular troops are sent, it is far from enough. The division commander said that the militia division would send two companies to supplement us." As he said that, his eyes swept towards me and asked, "Who are you?"
I quickly stood up and saluted him seriously: "Comrade Captain, I am Sergeant Oshanina from the Air Defense Command, and I am ordered to serve as the platoon leader of the anti-aircraft machine gun platoon in the Highlands."
"How long have you been in the army?" He picked up the paper on the table and looked at it, frowned.
"Four months. I joined the army a month before the war broke out."
"Oh, you've been a sergeant for only four months in the army. It seems that it's easy to get promoted in the rear." His words were full of provocation, and he said relentlessly: "War is a man's business, so women should stay in the rear."
"Red Flag Medal?!" Just as I was thinking about how to deal with the captain's provocation, the voice suddenly inserted into me was relieved by the sound of the next person. The tall officer said in surprise: "You actually got the Red Flag Medal."
"Yes, I have participated in several battles, and these two medals were personally awarded to me by Marshal Voroshilov." I replied in a humble and arrogant manner, "You can't be humble at this time, otherwise you will be looked down upon by them and think that I came up with some nepotism."
The medal and the marshal, these two things, immediately brought us closer to each other. The captain's attitude suddenly turned 180 degrees, and he stretched out his hand to me with a smile: "I am Captain Holopov, the commander of the destroyer battalion, and welcome you to the nameless highland."
After shaking hands, he pointed to the tall officer next to me and introduced me: "This is Captain Khlopov, the first-level political instructor in the camp."
After we sat back, the captain began to point to the map on the table and explain the current situation to me. The Pulkovo Heights are some hills located on the nearest road leading from the south to Leningrad. If the Germans occupy this place, they can control the roads in Moscow and Toleningrad Kiev to ensure that their motorized troops advance to the city. At the same time, the Germans on the high ground can also deploy cannons to accurately bombard a series of areas in the city.
"What is the mission of our anti-aircraft machine gun platoon?" After the captain introduced the situation to me, I asked again.
"The mission is very clear. Our battalion is sticking to the right side of the Pulkovo Heights and must firmly block the German devils here and cannot retreat at all. And your anti-aircraft machine gun platoon's mission is to provide effective air defense protection for our battalion's positions."
"I understand." I stood up straight. "Comrade Captain, I think I should go to the mates to meet him. Are you allowed to leave?" After listening to his nonsense for a long time and sucking so much second-hand smoke, it is time for me to go out and breathe fresh air.
"Let's go, the instructor and I will take you to the platoon." After that, the captain took the lead and walked out the door.
I followed the two of them and walked forward along a very flat path. Not long after walking, I saw a large wooden house. At this moment, a sound suddenly sounded: "Who? Stop, command!"
I looked in the sound and found that a female soldier was blocking the front with a bayonet rifle.
"What kind of command is not?!" The captain said with some displeasure: "I am Captain Holopov. Go and call the deputy platoon leader out, and say that your new platoon leader has arrived."
"Yes." The female soldier agreed, put the gun on her shoulder, turned her head and ran towards the big wooden house.
"Let's go, Sergeant Oshanina," the instructor who had not spoken pointed to the wooden house and said kindly to me, "Your soldiers live there."
"Comrade Sergeant," suddenly came from behind. I turned my head and saw that it was the driver who had just sent me. He was holding a cardboard box in his hand and was jogging towards me. He ran to my side. Before I could speak, he handed me the cardboard box and said, "I almost forgot that this is the soap distributed to you by the Air Defense Command."
I took the cardboard box, and the captain muttered: "The Air Defense Command has specially sent you soap." The driver heard it. Although his military rank was very low and he was just a corporal, he still said in a rude tone for a commander who was not his superior: "Comrade Captain, female soldiers are different from male soldiers, they have privileges."
After saying that, he saluted me and said, "Goodbye, my dear, good luck! Goodbye in victory!" He turned around and walked back along the road he came.
When the three of us walked to the wooden house, the female soldiers of the anti-aircraft machine gun platoon had already assembled. "Salute!" With the command, the female soldiers saluted us neatly.
Then a slender female soldier ran to us, saluted Captain Holopov seriously, and reported dryly: "Comrade Captain, Sergeant Karenina, deputy platoon leader, reports to you that the anti-aircraft machine gun platoon has been assembled, and you are waiting for your order."
"After a moment." The captain walked to the front of the queue and introduced me straight to everyone: "This is your new platoon leader, Sergeant Oshanina, and she will command you to fight in the future."
I put down the cardboard box in my hand, walked up to salute the female soldiers, and said briefly: "I am your new platoon leader Sergeant Oshanina. The deputy platoon leader and the squad leader stayed, and the rest of the soldiers were disbanded." I had a lot to say, but I was afraid that the Russian vocabulary I knew was not enough, so it would be better to avoid being misleading. When the team was disbanded, I called a female soldier who was closer to me: "Wait, please move this cardboard box into the house."
After the captain and instructor left, I took the deputy platoon leader and three squad leader to inspect the artillery position. "The first squad leader Jena is responsible for this artillery position, and there are no less than two base ammunition." Karenina introduced me next to me.
"Well, in addition to here, you also need to prepare one or two reserve positions." Although I have never been to the battlefield, I still understand that if I keep a fixed position in the battle, it is easy to become a target for enemy shooting.
"yes."
I reached out and touched the barrel again, and there was a little rust on my hand. I ordered Karenina again and said, "I will arrange for someone to wipe the machine gun tomorrow. It's been a long time since I used it, and it's all rusted."
"yes."
